Ein chinesischer E-SUV für wenig Geld? Das kann doch nicht funktionieren. Doch, der Aiways U5 ist sogar richtig gut – trotz zahlreicher kleinerer Schwächen.

Mit ein wenig mehr Feinschliff wäre der Kompakt-Crossover eine echte Gefahr für VWs ID.4 und Co. Denn der U5 versteckt sich bei seinem Antritt in Europa nicht und tritt durchaus selbstbewusst auf. Die geschlossene Front ohne Kühlergrill, die glatten Flanken und das sachlich gezeichnete Heck mit seinem breiten Leuchtenband wirken modisch und technisch auf der Höhe, strahlen gleichzeitig genug Originalität aus, um den China-Crossover aus der Masse ähnlich geschnittener Fahrzeuge herauszuheben.
Fast schon spektakulär wird es, wenn man die schweren, wertig wirkenden Türen mit den bündig eingelassenen Griffen öffnet und in den mit Leder ausgekleideten Innenraum steigt. Der ist ebenso schnörkellos und zeitgemäss gestaltet wie die äussere Hülle und bietet mit einem breiten Bildschirm, der sich vom Lenkrad bis in die Mittelkonsole zieht, einen zentralen Blickfang und Bezugspunkt.

Die Inszenierung beeindruckt. Vor allem beim ersten Kontakt. Und selbst der genauere Blick hinter die Kulissen entzaubert den U5 nicht komplett: Ja, die Materialien sind zum Teil einfach, das optionale Leder eher dünn, die Bildschirme wenig lichtstark und nur niedrig aufgelöst. Aber das Gesamtbild stimmt. Umso mehr, wenn man den Preis berücksichtig: Das fast komplett ausgestattete Basismodell bekommt man in der Schweiz knapp unter 40’000 Franken. Die Premium-Version mit 19- statt 17-Zoll-Rädern, Ledersitzen und Panorama-Schiebedach gibt es für rund 3000 Franken Aufpreis.
Global Tech News DailyIm Cockpit erkennt man aber auch, woran es dem Aiways-SUV wirklich noch mangelt. Vor allem bei der Bedienung des Infotainmentsystems ist noch viel Luft nach oben. Grösstes Problem ist das fehlende Navigationssystem. Statt eines eingebauten Geräts sollen die Kunden eine Smartphone-App nutzen, die im Borddisplay gespiegelt wird. Im Test funktionierte diese jedoch trotz anhaltender Bemühungen nicht. Entsprechende Kommentare im App-Store legen nahe, dass es sich dabei nicht um einen Einzelfall handelt. Unpraktisch ist auch der Ausschaltknopf für das Gesamtfahrzeug, der nicht physisch ausgeführt ist, sondern sich in einer hinteren Menüebene des Infotainments versteckt. Nutzt man ihn nicht, lässt sich das Auto zwar abstellen, verlassen und abschliessen. Es bleibt allerdings in einer Art Stand-by-Betrieb und verliert dabei Akkufüllung und Reichweite.
Rund 400 Kilometer weit soll der U5 mit voller Batterie kommen, mehr als 300 Kilometer waren es im Test nicht. Allerdings herrschten während der Fahrten winterliche Temperaturen, die auch Konkurrenzmodellen ähnlich stark zusetzen. Wer sich bemüht, effizient und langsam fährt, dürfte zudem noch einige Kilometer mehr rauskratzen können. Mit zurückhaltendem Gasfuss und gleichmässiger Fahrt liessen sich Verbrauchswerte deutlich unter 20 kWh pro 100 km erzielen, in der Regel sind es aber 24 kWh und mehr. Ordentlich, aber nicht herausstechend. Höchstens Mittelmass ist auch die Ladetechnik: Serienmässig und bislang alternativlos ist ein einphasiger Bordlader, der theoretisch 6,6 kW akzeptiert, in der Regel mit 4,6 kW auskommen muss und so für eine Komplettladung knapp 14 Stunden benötigt. Am Schnellader-Lader sind hingegen bis zu 90 kW möglich, im Test waren es immerhin bis zu 80 kW, die zudem relativ lange anliegen. Nach einer halben Stunde am Stecker sind somit rund 200 Kilometer Fahrt möglich.
Der Aiways ist kein Sportler, sondern ein Cruiser
Etwas nervig dabei: Der Ladeanschluss ist horizontal in der Front unterhalb des rechten Scheinwerfers untergebracht. Dadurch muss man das dicke Schnellladekabel um 90 Grad verwinden und sich zusätzlich weit herunterbeugen. Bei Dunkelheit blendet einen dabei der Scheinwerfer. Letztlich eine Kleinigkeit, die aber beispielhaft für die noch fehlende Detailpflege am U5 steht. Die Liste praktischer Schwächen liesse sich fortsetzen: So fehlen im Cockpit gescheite Ablagen für Portemonnaie und Handy, im Kofferraum wären ein paar Fächer oder Haken für Kleinzeug gut, und ein Handschuhfach haben sich die Chinesen gleich ganz gespart.
In den Haupttestkategorien schlägt sich der Chinese hingegen gut. Der 150 kW / 204 PS starke Frontantrieb tritt zügig an, beschleunigt den 1,7-Tonnen-Crossover in knapp 8 Sekunden auf Tempo 100. Das Fahrwerk ist weich und die Lenkung leichtgängig, wenn auch etwas synthetisch. Beides passt gut zum eher gelassenen Charakter des U5. Punkten kann er zudem beim Platzangebot in Reihe zwei, wo die Kniefreiheit auf Oberklasseniveau liegt. Der Kofferraum ist mit 370 Litern ordentlich gross, auch wenn die eher geringe Ladebreite und -höhe die Nutzbarkeit für sperriges Gut etwas einschränken.
Bis auf den langsamen Bordlader und das fehlende Navigationssystem beziehungsweise die wenig überzeugende Konnektivitätslösung leistet sich der Aiways U5 keine ernsthaften Schwächen. Wer über ein paar Schrullen und Bedienschwächen hinwegsieht, bekommt ein zeitgemässes und alltagstaugliches E-Auto – angesichts von Grösse und Reichweite auch noch zu einem sehr fairen Preis.
