Masters 2024: Patrick Cantlay just did something only three other people have done at Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Patrick Cantlay is always searching for history at the majors—looking for the elusive first major of his career. He’s played great thus far at the 2024 Masters, finding himself on the first page of the leader board Friday afternoon—thanks to making some unexpected history in his second round.

Cantlay holed out from the fairway for a second time in the tournament, hooping his second shot on the par-4 third hole on Friday. That followed a hole-out eagle on the par-4 17th hole in his first round. It’s only the fourth time in Masters history that a competitor has eagled a par 4 twice in the same tournament, joining Jack Nicklaus, Brett Ogle and Brandt Jobe with the feat.

It’s also the only time in Masters history that the feat has come in consecutive rounds. Remarkably, Nicklaus was 55 years old when he accomplished the record in 1995. Also remarkably, Nicklaus holed out for eagle twice on the same hole, the difficult par-4 fifth hole, in the first and third rounds in ’95. Ogle holed out for 2 on the third hole in 1993 and the 14th hole in the final round. Jobe’s hole-outs came on No. 10 in the second round and seventh hole of the final round in 2006.

Cantlay has earned multiple pieces of Masters crystal in rare ways thus far this week. We’ll see if he heads home with some other hardware by the time the week is over.
