Guri Melby about Kim Friele: She has left lasting and important traces

Norway’s Minister of Education and Integration of Norway praises gay rights pioneer Kim Friele.

“Few people’s lives make such a big difference for an entire society, and for an entire human view. It was infinitely sad to hear that Kim Friele passed away. But her work has left lasting, important traces, which no one should be allowed to erase,” Minister Guri Melby wrote on Facebook.

The text was posted after it became known that Kim Friele, who for much of her life fought for gay rights, passed away at 86 years old.

Friele came out as gay in 1963, becoming the first gay public figure in Norway – and worked for gay rights for the rest of her life.

“When Friele was young, queer people were seen as sick and wrong. Thanks to her commitment, most queer people today can live free lives. What was once forbidden is now recognized by society,” Melby wrote.

Melby praised Friele’s tireless work and thanked her for the fact that queer people today have more rights and strengthened protection.

“Kim Friele brought Norwegian queer people out of the shadows and into the rainbow-colored light. We owe her a big thank you for that,” said the Liberal Party politician.
