Assistant Defence Minister Matt Thistlethwaite says the Albanese government’s migration bill ensures they have “appropriate powers” to deport people who “haven’t followed the rules”.
Migration bill gives Albanese govt ‘appropriate powers’: Matt Thistlethwaite
The Labor government’s migration bill is up for debate in Parliament today.
“This is ensuring Australia maintains sovereignty over our borders and ensuring other people follow the rules,” Mr Thistlethwaite told Sky News Australia.
“We’re talking about people who have overstayed on visas … and weren’t following the rules when required to be deported.
“This bill puts in place measures to ensure that the government has the appropriate powers to act and to ensure that people who haven’t followed the rules can be deported.”
