Great Britain stunned as Germany come from behind to win Davis Cup quarter-final tie

Great Britain have been knocked out of the Davis Cup Finals. After Dan Evans got off to a stellar start and gave the squad a 1-0 lead over Germany in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, Cameron Norrie and the doubles pairing of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski narrowly lost their matches to send Britain packing, missing out on a second-consecutive semi-final at the revamped team tournament.

The British Davis Cup squad narrowly made it through to the last-eight after a tight tie against the Czech Republic in the group stage on Sunday.

After Evans was upset by world No 143 Tomas Machac 6-2 7-5 in the first singles rubber of the final Group C tie, recent Indian Wells champion Norrie narrowly defeated world No 140 Jiri Lehecka 6-1 2-6 6-1 to keep Britain alive in the ‘world cup of tennis’ competition.

The squad’s hopes of making it to the quarter-finals relied on the decisive doubles rubber, won by Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski, who defeated Mahac and Jiri Vesely 6-4 6-2 to secure a place in their sixth Davis Cup quarter-final since 2014.

Taking to the court in Austria to face Germany, the winners of Group F, Evans was able to turn things around following his disappointing defeat to the young Czech on Sunday.

The world No 25 needed just 55 minutes to defeat Peter Gojowczyk 6-2 6-1 in Tuesday’s first quarter-final rubber.

Evans dropped just eight points on his serve all match against the world No 86, who was playing his first Davis Cup tie in seven years, and told reporters he “didn’t sleep so well” last night, after receiving the news that he would be facing the British No 2 in the Davis Cup quarter-final.

Norrie was the one to struggle in his singles tie this time around, going an early break down to world No 51 and the man often dubbed the ‘dark horse’ of any ATP draw, Jan-Lennard Struff.

The German raced to a 3-0 lead in just eight minutes, but the man who recently made his Nitto ATP Finals debut as the second alternate was able to break back while 2-4 down, and get himself back on serve.

Having broken to serve for the opener at 6-5, Norrie was then broken straight back by Struff as the German forced a tiebreak and reeled off four points in a row to take the set 7-6(6), after the world No 12 held two set points at 6-4 in the breaker.

Norrie bounced back in the second and was able to break for 4-2, serving out the set 6-3 in 31 minutes to force a decider, losing just six points on his serve, but fell away at the end of the decider as the world No 51 was able to keep Germany in the quarter-final with a 7-6(6) 3-6 6-2 victory.

It meant Britain’s spot in the last-eight came down to the doubles pairing of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski, much like in their Group E tie against the Czech Republic.

Facing two-time Roland Garros doubles champion Kevin Krawietz, who paired up with Tim Puetz in the decisive rubber, the Brits lost a tight opening set 12-10 in the tiebreak.

The second set was an equally-close affair, also going to a breaker which saw the British pair blow their 5-0 lead, as Germany won seven points on the bounce to win the 7-6(10) 7-6(5), booking their place in the semi-final and knocking Britain out of the Davis Cup Finals.

Great Britain had defeated Germany at the same stage of the inaugural Davis Cup Finals two years ago in Madrid, after the tournament often dubbed the ‘world cup of men’s tennis’ was given a format shake-up.

In 2019, the British squad suffered a narrow defeat to eventual-champions Spain, as Kyle Edmund was able to defeat Felicano Lopez in the first singles tie before Evans lost to the year-end world No 1 that season – Rafael Nadal.

It was Nadal and Lopez who clinched the tie and a spot in the final in the doubles, as they defeated Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski in two tiebreak sets.

Germany will now face either the Russian Tennis Federation or Sweden in the last-four, with the semi-finals and final to be held in Madrid.
