Illegal immigration ‘bipartisan issue’ in US, not just ‘right-wing issue’: Mick Mulvaney

Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says illegal immigration has become a “bipartisan issue” even though it is ordinarily a “right-wing issue”.

According to the US Customs and Border Protection Agency, in the 12 months to the end of January this year, over 2.56 million people illegally crossed the southern border.

“Ordinarily, in this country, the southern border, immigration, more specifically illegal immigration, is the type of thing Republican candidates use to get out their base,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News host James Morrow.

Illegal immigration ‘bipartisan issue’ in US, not just ‘right-wing issue’: Mick Mulvaney

“We do not have mandatory voting in this country, so we’re always looking for things that drive people to the polls.

“Ordinarily, this is a right-wing issue – it’s not anymore; it has become a bipartisan issue, it’s become an issue in many of the blue left-leaning states.”
