manchester united learn uefa verdict on marcus rashford's champions league ban

Copenhagen v Manchester United – UEFA Champions League – Group A – Parken Stadium

UEFA have handed down a one-match ban to Marcus Rashford for the Manchester United forward’s red card in the Champions League.

The England international, 26, was dismissed in United’s recent defeat to Copenhagen for a challenge on Elias Jelert that was drawn to the referee’s attention for by the VAR official.

A statement from European football’s governing body on Friday confirmed the length of Rashford’s ban with the possibility of extending it beyond one game, should it have been deemed to be serious foul play.

However, he has only been hit with a single-game suspension, to be served in next week’s trip to Galatasaray.

It means Rashford will be available for United’s final group game, against Bayern Munich on December 12 at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils sit bottom of Group A with three defeats from four matches ahead of the trip to Istanbul. However, they remain just a point off a qualification spot.

Erik ten Hag will have to make do without Rashford as well as injured stars Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and most recently Mason Mount for Wednesday’s clash.

Speaking about the controversial decision to send Rashford off, the United boss stated: “I think he went for the ball and the referee needs such a long time to make it a red card.

“I think when you freeze it, it always looks worse. I’m very disappointed about such decisions. I think the game is never meant to be like this. It has nothing to do with football.”
