STEM education is a way of integrating theory-based curriculum into the real-world scenario. It has gained a lot of momentum after the central government’s active role in building platforms and schemes to support the researchers, teachers, and schools offering STEM education and robotics which helps young minds be more creative and innovative in the technological paradigm.

And to help the government achieve their ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ Campaign full-fledgedly, even the private players and firms are contributing in spreading the word.

To know how they are helping the cause, we got talking to two experts in the field, Anurag Gupta, Co-founder of STEMROBO Technologies, and Dr Sridhar G, Founder of Deeksha STEM.

They shared insights about the government schemes and their respective achievements in building a more creative and innovative lot in the future.

Increasing scope of STEM education in India

“With the rapidly changing industrial scenario and the centrality of innovation in all areas of human endeavour, STEM education is indeed the need of the hour,” says Dr Sridhar G.

“The scope for STEM education in India is massive. With the NEP also recognizing the need for a system that encourages critical thinking, hands-on working and creativity, STEM Education is poised to be the next major revolution in the Indian education system,” he adds.

“Edtech companies, Niti Aayog and the government are building a STEM ecosystem by establishing Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) to foster the knowledge about STEM, STEAM, AI, ML, AND Robotics for the K-12 students,” says Anurag Gupta.

“In the present scenario, STEM education has gained such humongous interest that students are even going abroad to pursue it,” he adds.

How edtech companies are helping promote STEM in India

STEMRobo Technologies and Deeksha STEM are two of the edtech companies which are working hand-in-hand with government schemes to push forward STEM education in India. Other prominent names are Avishkaar, Robotix Learning Solutions, Robokart, and Whizrobo

These edtech companies are setting up ATLs and robotic labs in schools and develop robotic kits and DIY kits for various age groups to promote out-of-the-box and technological thinking.

They also help kids develop their own products and then obtain patenting rights.

“Knowledge sharing and testing has been the corner stone and sole focus of our education system till date,” says Dr Sridhar.

“We employ an enquiry-based system that encourages questions and discussion to share information. We employ a pedagogy based on learning by design and project-based learning from the early years of schooling itself,” he explains.

In project-based learning, children will be systematically introduced to mechanisms, electronics, coding, design principles and they would be guided so that each child will be encouraged to develop simple solutions using these tools, Dr Sridhar says, explaining how Deeksha’s process works

“Children will work in groups on various projects such as a research project, media presentation project, arts and literature project or an experimental project. All designs and projects will be fully funded by the institution,” he adds.

Atal Tinkering Lab – a welcome initiative, say experts

“Establishing Atal Tinkering Labs is an initiative by NITI Aayog. It caters to K-12 students in India and enables the children to experiment, learn, develop and conceptualize varied scientific ideas,” says Anurag Gupta.

“Such schemes and initiatives facilitate projects similar to DIY projects where the students are stimulated to apply the knowledge in a practical way,” he adds.

They not only help the students to learn the real-life application and importance of the theories that they learn from their books but it is also developing a natural kinship towards STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education.

ATLs are empowering the youth with the skills of creativity, innovation, critical thinking etc. which have become the need of the hour in the 21st century.

The road to success

STEM education is only headed for an upward climb in India, especially because it aligns with the National Education Policy’s targets for building critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students.

Catering to these will help edtech companies in the STEM field grow in the future as well.

“A key ingredient for our success is the significant efforts invested in developing the appropriate content for the three learning paradigms — enquiry based learning, learning by design and project-based learning,” Dr Sridhar says.

“Along with clear learning outcomes and content, relevant teaching aids and training has also been made available for teachers,”he adds.

“But finally, the reason for its success is simply because the intent of STEM education resonates deeply with parents. They too recognize that their children need these skills to be relevant and gainfully employed in the future,” he says.
