Woman slams 'unnecessary' tipping culture after feeling 'pressured by a machine' to leave a gratuity at a self-checkout

A disgruntled shopper has vowed to stop ‘unnecessarily tipping’ in 2024, after feeling ‘pressured’ to leave a gratuity at a self-checkout.

Minna Lee, a blogger from New York who currently lives in LA, took to TikTok to hold herself ‘accountable’ and share her view on the topic of when to tip.

The video posted under her handle @livingminnaly has already been seen by more than 470,000 people, and is captioned: ‘Tipping culture in 2024 – I will always pay well and tip well for service but I’m not getting peer pressured by a tablet anymore in situations that don’t call for it’.

She announced to her 21,000 followers: ‘I’ll put this out there now so I stay accountable to this, but in 2024 I am no longer unnecessarily tipping.

‘Before you start thinking I’m stingy or something, for service I will definitely pay 20% to 25% on all of it – restaurants, coffee, beauty services, haircuts and things like that.

‘But the tablet tipping culture has gotten so out of control to the point where I now walk into a retail store and get a greetings card, pick one out myself, go up to the register and check out, and there is a 20% suggestion waiting for me’.

Minna recalled that she’s even heard of tablets asking for tips at ‘self-serve yoghurt stations’.

She reasoned: ‘Of course in this country we also have a trickle-down effect problem where businesses are not taking care of their employees appropriately.

‘So therefore the burden then falls on the consumer to support those employees wages, which is not okay’.

‘So like I said, in the case of service industry jobs, I am more than happy to tip for my coffee being made, things like that’.

The places where she will be reconsidering, include: ‘retail stores where no one is really helping you, any retail, not just clothing and stuff’.

Adding that she’s seen it happen at retailers such as alcohol stores, farmers market stands, and individual stalls.

She announced to her 21,000 followers: 'I'll put this out there now so I stay accountable to this, but in 2024 I am no longer unnecessarily tipping'

From now on she will not tip in situations where she’s not received much, or any service and the ‘tip of 20% would suggest 20% of the cost of goodst.

‘Telling myself the people pleaser in this – because every time that tablet gets flipped on me, I get such pressure – we will be strong in 2024,’ she said.

Viewers flocked to the comments to weigh in on the debate, with a lot of American’s sharing the same views as the TikToker.

One user penned: ‘I booked a hotel room ONLINE and it ask for a tip. Like who am I tipping?? A website?? It’s insane’.

A second added: ‘My dermatologist has a tip screen. I’m beyond baffled as to who that’s for’.

Another agreed: ‘I will only tip on delivery, beauty services, and dine in meals. I’m not doing it!’

Someone who works in the service industry chimed in with: ‘I make $10 an hour at a coffee shop. I make about an extra 8-10 an hour from tips.

‘We definitely put in the work to earn that, but I would prefer a base pay of 20+hr without tips, wishful thinking though’.

However, someone else questioned: ‘The way I’ve been asked to tip concert merch tables. I’m not tipping you 10-20% for reaching behind you to grab an overpriced t-shirt?’

Another added: ‘To be honest I also thinking the tipping in the hair industry, especially for people who work independently is out of hand. They determine thier prices’.

It comes after a report last year revealed that two-thirds of Americans have a negative view about tipping and are growing ‘stingier’ with gratuities on a range of everyday services.

A Bankrate survey of 2,500 people revealed that shoppers are tipping less across the board for eating out, taxis, food delivery, haircuts and their daily coffee.

Some 30 percent of people said they thought tipping culture had gotten out of control as prompts for gratuities has spilled out from bars and restaurants and into stores, takeout chains and even self-service machines.

Just last week, another American caused a stir on TikTok by sharing a list of ‘people she will not be tipping in 2024’ – which included cosmetic procedure and beauty service providers, as well as food pick-up services.

The video sparked further debate, as she announced that she also thinks, ‘tipping culture is out of control.’
