Google rolls out new ‘Speaking Practice’ feature to improve English speaking skills
Google Search is rolling out a new feature to help users improve their English-speaking skills. Called ‘Speaking Practice’, the new functionality is currently available to those in Argentina, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico and Venezuela enrolled in Google Search Labs.
The tech giant says the new feature lets users participate in AI-powered interactive language learning exercises. This will help them learn new words that can be then used in everyday scenarios.
According to TechCrunch, Speaking Practice was first spotted by a user on X (formerly Twitter). The new feature works by asking the user a question following which the user is prompted to answer using from a predefined set of words.
One of the screenshots shared by the user suggests that the feature could have an AI chatbot that tells the user they want to get into shape followed by a question that asks them what should they do. The user is then required to answer with one-word responses that include words like ‘tired’, ‘heart’ and ‘exercise’.
For those not in the loop, Google launched a new Duolingo-like English tutoring feature last year that helped people practice and improve their English-speaking skills. The new Speaking Practice functionality builds on top of that and adds a sort of dimension.
To use the new Speaking Practice feature, open the Google app on your device and tap on the Labs icon on the top left corner. Here, you will see the new feature, provided it is available on your account.
It looks like Google wants to take on the likes of Duolingo and Babbel, the two most popular language-learning apps. As of now, there is no information if Google is planning to bring the experimental feature to more regions.
