Good news: Unemployment in Norway decreased in July

Good news: Unemployment in Norway decreased in July

At the end of July, 149,300 completely unemployed workers, partially unemployed workers, and job seekers were registered at the NAV. That makes up 5.3% of the labor force.

That is a decrease of 5,500 compared to the end of June, adjusted for seasonal variations, the NAV stated on Friday.

A total of 86,800 people were registered as completely unemployed at the end of July, which is 3.1% of the labor force in Norway.

“The decline in the number of job seekers will continue in July in line with the relaxation of infection control measures,” NAV chief Hans Christian Holte stated.

Fewer laid-off workers

A total of 17,600 among the completely unemployed workers are laid off, while the same applies to 22,200 of the partially unemployed. The laid-off make up a total of 1.4% of the labor force.

“The number of layoffs has fallen sharply in recent months, and in July, there are about half as many layoffs compared to March.

“In the last month, there has been a reduction in the number of partially laid off people, which leads to the decline,” Holte said.

Most unemployed workers in tourism and transport

The number of job seekers decreased or remained stable for all occupational groups.

Among those who are completely unemployed, the decline is greatest in tourism and transport with 800 fewer job seekers than the month before, adjusted for seasonal variations. At the same time, this is the occupational group with the most unemployed workers.

Largest decline in Oslo

In all counties in Norway, there has been a decline in the number of job seekers in the last month. The largest declines were registered in Oslo (-5.7%) and Vestfold and Telemark (-4.4%).

The proportion of completely unemployed workers as a percentage of the labor force is highest in Oslo at 4.2% and lowest in Nordland at 2%.

A total of 25,276 people in the capital are registered as completely or partially unemployed, a decrease of 2,622 people compared to June.

For the country as a whole, there has been a decline among all age groups, and it is greatest among those between 25 and 29 years, with a decline of 6%.

The proportion of completely unemployed workers is highest in the age group 30 to 39 years.
