Holger Rune reunites with Patrick Mouratoglou as he reaffirms his huge goals

Holger Rune has announced that he has reunited with former coach Patrick Mouratoglou, with the Frenchman replacing Boris Becker as the Dane’s head coach.

The 20-year-old highlighted the fact that “some of the greatest triumphs” of his career so far had come with Mouratoglou in his coaching box as he reiterated his goals to win majors and become world No 1.

Mouratoglou’s appointment comes after Rune split with both Becker and Severin Luthi in the past month, having assembled a new coaching team for the 2024 season.

Luthi — who departed at the end of January — had only been appointed in December, while Becker — who left earlier this month — had been hired in October.

Mouratoglou coached Rune from October 2022 to August 2023, with a very brief break during the spring, helping him win the 2022 Paris Masters and finish as a runner-up in Monte Carlo and Rome. Rune reached a career-high ranking of world No 4 before parting ways with Mouratoglou in August last year.

The world No 7 said in a statement: “I am excited to resume working with Patrick. With him I have achieved some of the greatest triumphs of my career so far, and I can’t wait for us to chase the next major titles together.

“Moving ahead, we have had good talks on how our collaboration should unfold, and we have agreed on a strong setup that creates the best conditions for my performance.

“It is common knowledge that I am determined to win Grand Slam titles and reach that number one spot on the world ranking. That requires the right coaching constellation and team surrounding me.

“Sometimes you must try a variety of things to find out what works – and what does not. In recent months, I have learned a lot about what works for me, and I believe Patrick is the best person to lead the team and help me achieve my goals.”

Mouratoglou gave his thoughts on the pair’s renewed collaboration: “I have known Holger since he was 13 years old, and he is an extraordinary tennis player with a unique drive and enormous potential.

“At a very young age, Holger has already achieved great results and become a household name and one of the best tennis players in the world. It shows to me that Holger is one-of-a-kind, and I am thrilled to assist Holger in reaching his goal of becoming the best tennis player in the world.”

The 53-year-old Frenchman addressed the news further on his Instagram account: “I am excited to start a new collaboration with Holger Rune. We have known each other since he was 13 years old and I always believed in his potential.

“He has high goals and so do I for him. It is the start of a new adventure. See you guys in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.”

Danish coach and former ATP player Kenneth Carlsen will remain a part of Rune’s coaching team and will assist Mouratoglou.
