Golden Kimmann looks back: ‘I realized I am in the lead in the Olympic final’

Kimmann was at the doctor’s office last Monday. An ultrasound was made of his knee and he watched it shaking his head. “Once it dawned on me what was going on, I thought for a moment it was done.” Kimmann thought his dream would remain that forever: a dream.

“Because I knew that if I wanted to take Olympic gold somewhere in my career, it would have to be here in Tokyo. This course suits me so well.”

Words of Salvation

He was already carefully preparing for bad news. But the doctor said that the collision with the official, which caused Kimmann to fall hard, should not have any consequences for his participation in the Games. “I was lucky that my knee ligaments were still intact. I asked the doctor: can I cycle with this? Then he said: as long as you don’t fall on it, you’ll be fine.”

Those were liberating words for the crosser, who has been dreaming of a medal on the Olympic podium since he was twelve. “I thought: if I fall, I’ll be the jack anyway, so let’s try it.”

He did, however, need quite a few painkillers. “And I made a plan with the doctor to cool down, cycle loose. We did what was smart.”

On the final day itself, the painkillers seemed to throw a spanner in the works: he had taken too many and they were heavy on his stomach. “But because of the rain, the game was postponed 45 minutes, which suited me well.”
