GMC Canyon (2023)

Le constructeur américain n’a pas fait les choses à moitié.

Si Chevrolet présente un nouveau pick-up ou SUV, il y a fort à parier qu’une variante GMC ne soit pas loin derrière. Le GMC Canyon, cependant, n’est pas simplement un Chevrolet Colorado moins civilisé. Doté d’une carrosserie unique et d’équipements exclusifs, le Canyon de troisième génération s’impose dans un segment de plus en plus concurrentiel.

L’un des éléments majeurs de cette catégorie est désormais le tout-terrain. Outre le Colorado ZR2 et le Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, le prochain Ford Ranger Raptor montre clairement l’importance que les constructeurs accordent au franchissement et aux courses dans le désert. Le Canyon AT4X reprend la philosophie du modèle AT4 avec un équipement similaire à celui du Colorado ZR2. Comme ce dernier, il est équipé de jantes de 17 pouces et de pneus tout-terrain de 33 pouces, d’une suspension surélevée et d’amortisseurs Multimatic DSSV, ainsi que de verrous électroniques avant et arrière et d’un mode de conduite “Baja” spécifique.

L’AT4X Edition 1, qui n’existera que pour (vous l’aurez deviné) la première année-modèle, vient compléter cet ensemble. Doté d’un treuil dans un pare-chocs tout-terrain, d’une barre lumineuse à LED de 30 pouces, de jantes de 17 pouces, de caméras avant et arrière sous la carrosserie (faisant partie d’un système à 10 caméras), c’est le Canyon tout-terrain ultime.

Les designers ont étiré la calandre à l’horizontale plutôt qu’à la verticale, elle se marie parfaitement avec les feux de position étroits et les phares séparés pour une apparence plus haut de gamme, mais indiscutablement agressif. Les feux de position en forme de L inversé semblent imiter la façon dont la carrosserie s’incurve sur les ailes musclées, qui présentent des passages de roues avec des feux orange intégrés.

    Ces feux ne sont pas imposés par le gouvernement fédéral ou quoi que ce soit, mais GMC affirme que cette idée a plu aux clients lorsqu’elle a été introduite sur le Sierra HD – l’ajouter au Canyon était une évidence, car les petits feux encadrent parfaitement la cabine à quatre portes. À l’arrière, les feux à LED reprennent la signature des modèles précédents.

    En plus des éléments de design communs, tous les Canyon ont le même groupe motopropulseur que le Chevrolet Colorado : un quatre cylindres turbo de 2,7 litres. GMC ne donne pas autant de détails sur son groupe motopropulseur que sa consœur Chevrolet, à part le fait que l’AT4X aurait un moteur “à haut rendement”. Cela devrait se traduire par 240 chevaux sur les modèles de base et de milieu de gamme, tandis que les modèles Denali, AT4 et AT4X afficheront plus de 310 chevaux pour les deux premiers (Denali et AT4) et 430 ch pour le dernier (AT4X).

    GMC a considérablement amélioré l’habitacle du nouveau Canyon. L’AT4X et le Denali disposent tous deux d’un affichage tête haute exclusif au segment, ainsi que d’un combiné d’instruments numériques de 11,0 pouces et d’un écran tactile de 11,3 pouces. Le design s’inspire quelque peu de la Corvette, sans toutefois orienter l’écran tactile vers le conducteur.

    Le design du tableau de bord est axé sur l’horizontale, avec des couches trapues et une abondance de matériaux pris en sandwich dans un espace restreint. Il y a du cuir, du vrai bois sur le Denali, de la fibre de carbone sur l’AT4X, et du plastique brillant ou peint pour paraître anodisé. GMC mérite également des éloges pour son utilisation des détails et des couleurs sur les Denali et AT4X.

    Le noir et le beige sont une combinaison classique pour le modèle haut de gamme, mais le noir/rouge/blanc du modèle tout-terrain est brillant, courageux et rafraîchissant, avec des éclats de surpiqûres contrastantes sur les supports de sièges et les poches de porte. Si seulement il n’y avait pas quelques plastiques minables – le dessus du tableau de bord et les parties supérieures de la porte sont durs et bon marché, ce qui ne correspond tout simplement pas à la mission ou au prix de la Denali ou de l’AT4X.

    Et mes amis, son prix sera probablement élevé. GMC ne communique que les prix de l’AT4X Edition 1 – les réservations commencent aujourd’hui et nécessitent un dépôt de 100 $ – mais à 63 350 $, ce sera probablement le pick-up le plus cher de la catégorie. Une Jeep Gladiator Rubicon coûte un peu moins de 50 000 $, tandis que l’actuel Colorado ZR2 exige 46 000 $. GMC dit que le Canyon standard commencera autour de 40 000 $, mais cela représente tout de même une augmentation de 8 000 $ par rapport au modèle Crew Cab 2022 le plus abordable en vente aujourd’hui.

    En plus du prix détaillé, GMC ne partage pas la consommation en carburant de ce nouveau modèle. Nous nous attendons à ce qu’il arrive plus tard cette année, avant la date de mise en vente prévue au début de 2023 pour les modèles de base, le Denali et l’AT4. Malgré la possibilité de précommander l’Edition 1, l’AT4X arrivera en fait en dernier, avec une date de mise en vente prévue au printemps 2023.
