Gifts during the holidays? A quarter of the Dutch think it is unnecessary

December is almost upon us and that means that the whole of the Netherlands is going to spend a lot of money again. Think of Sinterklaas presents for family, friends, fellow students and colleagues, but also presents for under the Christmas tree and extensive Christmas dinners, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s receptions. A festive month full of fun, but research shows that not everyone feels the same way about shopping extensively for gifts.

Holiday spending pattern

Last year, the corona crisis turned out to have hardly any effect on the spending pattern of the average Dutch person during the holiday period. Consumers were expected to spend less during shopping festivities such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but nothing could be further from the truth. The accountancy and consultancy firm PWC reported that the Dutch spent an average of 243 euros in 2020 in the run-up to Christmas. In 2019 that was still 229 euros. Most of the money was spent on products to make the home more pleasant. Such as books, purchases from DIY stores and subscriptions to streaming services. Handy gadgets such as apple watch bands that can be used for sports at home were also popular. The gyms were closed for a long time, so many people started exercising in their own living room or garden.

More money saved

The increase in spending can be explained by the fact that people have been able to save more. After all, holidays and outings were impossible due to the corona measures, so many Dutch people had money left over. This is expected to be the case this year as well. In addition, online shopping is becoming increasingly popular due to the increasingly strict measures.

Exchange and resell

A survey by Acties.nl, in which 1074 adult Dutch people participated, showed that no fewer than a fifth have tried to exchange or resell their gift. The results also showed a difference in provinces. North Hollanders (27 percent) and Zeeland (33 percent) sell their Sinterklaas or Christmas gifts most often, while Frisians (12 percent) turned out to be the most satisfied with what they received.

Quality presents

About twenty-five percent of the Dutch prefer to spend the holidays without gifts. The reason for this would be the quality of the presents. For example, a third of all respondents admit to having bought something because of a high discount and not because of the recipient’s wishes. Also, 57 percent of all Dutch people prefer to buy their Christmas and/or Sinterklaas gifts in the sale as much as possible. At 62 percent, women in particular appear to be real bargain hunters, compared to 51 percent among men.

Perfect excuse

Like every year, December is the busiest month of the year for online stores and delivery companies. Research shows that holiday delivery times are a perfect excuse for those who haven’t thought of a gift. ‘Oops, it still has to be delivered,’ turns out to be a frequently used excuse. No less than one in six Dutch people has said that, while they had not actually ordered anything yet.
