Giants' Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton could play vs. Rams

It is unclear who will be throwing the ball for the Giants this weekend, but they will be more comfortable with who is catching it.

Back at practice Wednesday were Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, both receivers having missed the past two weeks with hamstring injuries.

They were listed as limited participants in the walk-through leading up to Sunday’s game against the Rams, but they were running routes and look poised to return — and Shepard proclaimed he would.

“I feel great,” said Shepard, who caught 18 passes for 223 yards the first three weeks before the injury. “Ready to go.”

Kadarius Toney, who stepped up in their absences — including a 189-yard explosion last week — also was back at practice as a limited participant after sustaining an ankle injury Sunday against the Cowboys.

Either Daniel Jones or Mike Glennon should have solid options to connect with at MetLife Stadium, though Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Kenny Golladay (knee) did not practice and are unlikely to play.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) also did not practice. Without Thomas last week, the Giants moved Nate Solder to left tackle and inserted Matt Peart at right tackle.

On the other side of the ball, safety Jabrill Peppers returned as a limited participant after sitting last week with a hamstring issue.

Toney, who was ejected from Sunday’s game after throwing a punch at Dallas’ Damontae Kazee, reportedly is not expected to be suspended.

“There’s discipline inside and I’ll handle discipline in-house,” coach Joe Judge said.

There are both ravings and warnings concerning the rookie.

“He’s twitchy, man. I was calling him a jitter bug,” Shepard said of the first-round pick, who has 267 yards receiving the past two weeks.

“Kid is amazing,” John Ross said. “I told him I’m a fan. Said, ‘You got great feet.’ He’s just talented, man. He’s going to be special.”

As long as he is able to stay in games. Rams corner Jalen Ramsey is skilled at getting inside receivers’ heads. There was a memorable fight last year with Golden Tate, and Ramsey has tussled with A.J. Green.

“He’ll be fine. Jalen likes to talk — everybody knows that around the league,” Shepard said. “We’re not going to shy away from anything.”

Judge was asked about Jon Gruden, the now former coach of the Raiders — whose leaked, decade-old emails included racist tropes, rampant sexism and overt homophobia.

The Giants coach said he hasn’t kept up with the scandal.

“I know there’s a lot of things in there that are obviously inappropriate,” Judge said. “Before I make any specific statements, I haven’t done any research on it. We’ve been kind of buried in between Dallas and the Rams and things of that nature.”
