Giants report card: This is getting ridiculous

Grading the Giants’ 20-9 loss to the Dolphins on at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

This has gone from bad to worse to ridiculous. No touchdowns, 250 total yards. The longest pass play went for 20 yards. Backup Mike Glennon (23 of 44, 187 yards, 1 INT) was all over the place. Saquon Barkley had one run of 23 yards and 10 more runs that totaled 32 yards. Two drops on short passes by Barkley were inexcusable and troubling. Barkley caught six passes (that’s good) but for only 19 yards (that’s bad). Kenny Golladay (3-37) hurt his ribs and continues to be a negligible factor. Three second-half sacks allowed more a product of Glennon holding the ball more than anything else, although RG Will Hernandez was beaten on one of them. Darius Slayton had only two catches despite getting targeted seven times.

Grade: F

Dink and dunk and short stuff from Tua Tagovailoa (30 of 41, 244 yards, 2 TDs) was effective enough. Giants failed to create a turnover for the first time all season and they really needed one or two in this game. Good job limiting Dolphins’ running game (2.7 yards per attempt) but poor red-zone play led to two TD passes given up. Sack by rookie Quincy Roche kept the Dolphins deep in their own territory in the first quarter. Another rookie, Azeez Ojulari, took the team lead with 6.5 sacks when he dropped Tagovailoa for a 9-yard loss in the third quarter. Another rookie, CB Aaron Robinson, is improving each game and made a big stop on Jaylen Waddle to force a punt. Waddle (9-90) is shifty but at least he was kept out of the end zone.

Special Teams

Riley Dixon’s first punt pinned the Dolphins back on the 11-yard line. His second punt dropped dead on the Miami 11. In the third quarter, Dixon failed to keep his kick out of the end zone for a disappointing touchback. Pharoh Cooper eluded one tackle on a 15-yard punt return late in the first quarter. To start the third quarter, Cooper drifted back to field a 65-yard punt and made a nice recovery for an 11-yard return. Keion Crossen was called for a 15-yard penalty in the fourth quarter for running out of bounds and failing to make an attempt to get back inbounds on a punt return. Graham Gano hit three field goals, including a 51-yarder, and then missed near the end from 56 yards away.

Grade: B+

Joe Judge said he was “pleased” with some of the things he saw on offense. He has to be grading on a curve. His team has no answers when it comes to scoring points. The saying “It’s not the plays, it’s the players’’ certainly rang true in this one. It did not matter what interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens sent in, it mostly did not work. A timeout was burned on offense late in the first half. They burned a timeout in the second half trying to avoid a delay of game when it was second-and-23 on their own 14-yard line. Huh? This coaching staff treats timeouts like pennies, tossing them aside. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham probably needed to be more aggressive, considering his guys needed to force turnovers to have a chance.

Grade: D
