The Wayzata Trojans (21-2-2) jump to the No. 2 spot in Minnesota high school boys hockey after a 4-2 win over No. 3 Edina (20-4-2) at Braemar Arena.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s (20-4-1) earned a big win over No. 5 Chanhassen (20-5) last week

No. 1 Minnetonka (23-0-2)

The Skippers put a stamp on their undefeated regular season with a 6-0 shutout of No. 14 Eden Prairie on Thursday. The road to another state championship will be daunting, and it starts this Thursday with a matchup between the winner of Waconia/Chaska.

No. 2 Wayzata (21-2-2)

Braemar Arena was treated to a classic on Saturday as Wayzata picked up a massive win over Edina 4-3 to close out the regular season. The win gets the Trojans the number two spot in this week’s rankings, but more importantly, the one seed in Section 6AA. To kick off the section playoffs, they’ll take on two-win Blake this Thursday in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 Edina (20-4-2)

It’s Deja Vu for the Hornets, who finished the regular season just like the last one–losing to Wayzata. The good news for the Hornets? They later got revenge in the section final. The road back to the section championship will be tough for the Hornets, though, with a potential matchup against No. 3 Benilde-St. Margaret’s looming in the semifinals.

No. 4 Benilde-St. Margaret’s (20-4-1)

Arguably the hottest team in the state, the Knights are fresh off a 2-0 dispatching of No. 5 Chanhassen on Thursday. With hot goaltending alongside a buzzing first line, the Knights have all the makings of a team that can make a deep run this postseason. They’ll start their campaign off with a matchup against Armstrong/Cooper this Thursday.

No. 5 Chanhassen (20-5)

The Storms’ 12-game win streak was snapped last Thursday at the hands of Benilde St. Margaret’s as the offense was stifled by the Red Knights’ goaltender. It was still a solid regular season for the Storm, who earned the number two seed in Section 2AA and will play host to Bloomington Jefferson on Thursday.

No. 6 Shakopee (20-4-1)

Chanhassen wasn’t the only team that had a long win streak snapped, as last week the Sabers had their 10-game win streak broken by a surging Eastview squad. Among the four losses Shakopee has accumulated in the regular season, three came by one goal. The Sabers will now look ahead to the section playoffs, where the rubber match against Prior Lake will take place this Thursday.

No. 7 Rogers (17-6-2)

With Roger’s leading point-getters Mason Jenson and Cole Bumgarner returning, they may just be the favorites in Section 5AA. The Royals closed out the regular season on Saturday with an 8-4 win over Coon Rapids and extended their win streak to six games. It will be Coon Rapids again this week for the Royals, this time with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

No. 8 Hill-Murray (15-8-1)

For most of the season, Section 4AA had been up in the air, but last week the Pioneers cemented themselves as the top seed with wins over Maple Grove and Moorhead. They’ll await the winner of East Ridge versus Tartan in the quarterfinals, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

No. 9 Maple Grove (19-6)

Maple Grove bounced back from a loss earlier in the week to Hill Murray with a 4-1 win over Andover to solidify the top spot in Section 5AA. The Crimson should have no problems in the quarterfinals–as they’ll take on either Blaine or Irondale–but a potential semifinal matchup against Champlin Park could present them with some challenges.

No. 10 Eastview (17-7-1)

With Eastview beating St. Thomas Academy and Rosemount earlier in the season, it claims the number one seed in Section 3AA. With a senior-heavy class, and a defense playing its best hockey down the stretch, the Lightning seemed poised to make a deep postseason run.

No. 11 Andover (16-8-1)

The Huskies fell 4-2 to Maple Grove in their only action of the week, dropping their record to 16-8-1 on the season and placing them down to the two seed in Section 7AA. The road back to the state tournament is much easier than the rest of the top ten, with Grand Rapids likely being the only squad that could give them fits. They’ll open up the section playoffs this Tuesday against Duluth Marshall.

No. 12 Rosemount (18-7)

The Irish finished their regular season with wins over Eagan and Lakeville South. The ten game win streak they amassed at the beginning of the season was enough to earn them the two seed in Section 3AA. It’s hard to beat a team three times, and the Irish will have to do that this week in the trilogy against Eagan to open the section playoffs.

No. 13 St. Thomas Academy (15-8-2)

The Cadets thumped Two Rivers 7-0 in their final game of the season. The win improves their record to 15-8-2 on the season and earns them the third seed in Section 3AA, where they will rematch Two Rivers in the opening round.

No. 14 Eden Prairie (16-8-1)

A rollercoaster week for the Eagles began with a 6-0 loss to top ranked Minnetonka but ended on a high note with a 7-1 victory over Buffalo. They have certainly exceeded expectations this season, and have a chance to continue to do so this week against Holy Family in a four versus five matchup in Section 2AA.

No. 15 Centennial (16-7-2)

While the late season heater came to an end the week prior, Centennial is still a dangerous team at the moment. The Cougars capped off their season with wins over Blake and Blaine and claimed the number two seed in Section 5AA. They’ll await the winner of Osseo and Spring Lake Park–a matchup that takes place this Tuesday.

No. 16 St. Cloud Cathedral (20-4-1)

The top team in Cass 1A held serve last week with road wins over Little Falls and Monticello. With those two wins, the Crusaders are now 13-0-1 with their starting goaltender Nick Hansen between the pipes. The postseason campaign starts Tuesday for St. Cloud Cathedral with a matchup against Becker/Big Lake.

No. 17 Grand Rapids (14-11)

Grand Rapids has cooled off a bit since its late season surge, losing its past two games to Hermantown and Benilde-St. Margaret’s. The full body of work still earns the Thunderhawks the one seed in Section 7AA, and they’ll start their postseason off against Cambridge/Isanti on Tuesday.

No. 18 Moorhead (12-12-1)

It hasn’t been pretty, but Moorhead found a way to claim the top seed in its section. The Spuds finished the regular season at 12-12-1 and will play host to Brainerd on Tuesday as they will look to make it six straight section championships.

No. 19 Roseau (18-6-1)

Roseau put an exclamation point on what was already an impressive season with a 5-0 win over East Grand Forks to finish the regular season with a record of 18-6-1. The Rams earned the two seed in Section 8AA, and will look to be the ones to dethrone the dominant Moorhead Spuds. To do that, though, they’ll need to start off by taking care of business against St. Cloud on Tuesday.

No. 20 Warroad (20-5)

The Warriors finished the season strong over the weekend with wins over Bemidji and Northern Lakes to get them to the 20-win mark. Despite the strong record, a late season loss to East Grand Forks means they’ll have to settle for the two seed in Section 8A. Warroad will await the winner of Kittson County vs. Park Rapids, which takes place this Tuesday.

No. 21 White Bear Lake (17-7-1)

Last week was a much needed get-right week for the Bears, who went 3-0 to close out the season. A hat trick from Nolan Roed in a 5-3 win against Cretin-Derham Hall helped them get a share of the Suburban East crown, but more importantly, the two seed in section 4AA. WBL will open up section playoffs against the winner of St. Paul Johnson vs Roseville, which takes place this Tuesday.

No. 22 Hermantown (15-8-2)

The Hawks closed their regular season out on a high note, defeating No. 17 Grand Rapids over the weekend to get them some positive momentum heading into the section playoffs. Playing in a relatively weak Section 7A, the Hawks will be the odds-on favorite to get back to the state tournament, and will open their campaign off against International Falls on Tuesday.

No. 23 Elk River/Zimmerman (15-9-1)

The Elks grinded out another close win last Tuesday, holding on against St. Cloud 2-1. The win gives them their fifth straight and also helped them get the four seed in Section 8AA. While Moorhead and Roseau seemed destined to meet in the section championship, don’t be surprised if the Elks spoil that presumption.

No. 24 Champlin Park (15-9-1)

Speaking of dangerous four seeds, it’s Champlin Park who enters the rankings at 24. The Rebels are riding a six-game win streak heading into the section playoffs and find themselves in a four versus five matchup against Totino-Grace this Thursday. If they can past the Eagles, it will set up an intriguing matchup versus the top-seeded Maple Grove Crimson.

No. 25 Gentry Academy (19-6)

Gentry Academy ended its season on a whimper, losing 3-2 to Sartell on Friday to finish out its regular season. Despite having 19 wins, the Stars were given the short end of the stick in Section 4AA–receiving the four seed. Assuming they’re able to get past Woodbury on Thursday, a matchup against Hill-Murray in the semifinals could be one to keep an eye on.
