The coming-of-age Hindi film, All India Rank, follows the story of Vivek Singh, a young man who moves Kota to study for the IIT-JEE exam. Varun Grover’s directorial debut had its world premiere at the Mumbai Film Festival; it released in theatres on February 23. Now, the film starring Bodhisattva Sharma and Sheeba Chaddha is making its OTT debut on Netflix on April 19.

On Instagram, Netflix India revealed when Grover’s film would be arriving on the streaming platform. The National Award-lyricist has written and directed the feature and penned the lyrics as well. The music was composed by Mayukh-Mainak.

Bodhisattva Sharma plays the dreamy Vivek who is unsure what he wants to do in his future. His parents, played Shashi Bhushan and Geeta Agrawal Sharma, have great expectations for their only child. While at the coaching institute, Vivek also makes some friends and learns important lessons in life.

All India Rank is set in the late 1990s and Grover recalled his own college experiences. In an interview with Zoom, the filmmaker had shared, “And this period of time in my life, the late 90s time I spent in Lucknow was very special for me. It was something which something I kept going back to generally. Jo recurring dreams hote hai na, woh bahut baar mujhe usi samay ke, use ghar ke, use school ke, uss time ke doston ke sapne bahut aate the. I thought this is something which has a very deep impression in my mind and I should just do something about it.”

The Times Now review of the Hindi film read: Varun Grover has taken a simple coming-of-age story and has added a dash of comedy and warmth to it. His treatment of the characters and situations is noteworthy as it could have easily slipped into melodrama, but it remains relatable to most.
