Alan Hutch has been jailed for 21 months

A nephew of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has been jailed for 21 months for attempting to rob a woman who was withdrawing money from an ATM.

Alan Hutch, 41, who suffers mental health problems, approached the woman from behind while she was using the ATM near Tesco on Dublin’s Talbot Street. Hutch then grabbed her hands after she had taken €100 out of the machine and a struggle ensued. However, he did not intend to harm the woman.

The woman managed to hold onto the money and ‘got a good look at Hutch’, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard. A number of members of the public tried to intervene before Hutch fled the scene. The woman was left shaken and suffered a sore hand and sore nails.

Hutch, of Portland Row in the north inner city, pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery on March 3, 2023. He has a number of previous convictions including assault causing harm, burglary, robbery and escape from lawful custody, the court heard.

Garda Cathy Giblin told Judge Martin Nolan there were a number of CCTV cameras in the area and a number of gardai were able to identify Hutch. Two warrants were executed for his home at Portland Row and a Peter McVerry hostel where he was staying for a time and a number of clothing items were seized.

Gardai discovered Hutch in the kitchen of the Portland Row address and arrested him. He was remanded in custody and remains in custody since he was refused bail in April 2023. Alan Hutch is a son of Eddie Hutch (59) who was murdered at his home on February 8, 2016, in a revenge attack for the notorious Regency Hotel shooting three days earlier.

His mother Jane Hutch (66) was found dead from a suspected heart attack at the family home in January this year. Eddie Hutch’s brother Gerry Hutch was found not guilty by the Special Criminal Court in April this year of the gangland murder of David Byrne at the Regency.

Gda Giblin agreed with defence counsel Derek Cooney, BL, that “it’s clearly obvious he is suffering mental health issues and his family is well known in the area and have suffered many tragedies.

“Gardai are well aware of the feud and certain operation matters were put in place to protect family members,” Mr Cooney said.

“He was clearly identified by gardai and there was no thought or planning into the offence as it was done in full blown view,” Mr Cooney said, adding that Hutch has very little recollection of the event as he is unwell and suffers psychosis, hallucinations and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“Everyone, in his mind, wants to do him harm,” said Mr Cooney. “He is on anti-psychosis medication in prison but has overdosed twice and is on an opioid antagonist after he was unable to respond,” said Mr Cooney, adding that what happened to his father his mental health spiralled and he also found his mother had passed away.

Mr Cooney said since being admitted to Cloverhill Hutch has engaged with mental health services and has been put on a waiting list for the Central Mental Hospital and is responding well to his medication.

Judge Nolan said Hutch has a long record of convictions, some of which are relevant. “He has his own problems with mental health and his family suffered many, many tragedies.

“He is getting some help for his mental health problems in prison and hopefully the medication will help,” the judge said, adding he accepts Hutch didn’t intend to harm the woman but that he deserves a custodial sentence and imposed 21 months backdated to when Hutch first went into custody in April 2023.
