Gemma Collins claims she was advised by doctors to terminate an intersex pregnancy

Gemma Collins has opened up about making the heartbreaking decision to terminate her baby on the advice of her doctors.

The reality TV star, 43, who is currently engaged to Rami Hawash has been candid about her desire to become a mother, but has already suffered through a turbulent time on her pregnancy journey.

She revealed in 2020 that she endured a miscarriage years ago when she says she didn’t realise that she was pregnant.

Gemma has now also decided to share another painful pregnancy moment from her younger years.

Speaking about her life on the Everything I Know About Me podcast, Gemma revealed that her doctors had advised her to have a termination when she became pregnant in her early twenties.

It was a gruelling time for the TOWIE star as she revealed that the father of her baby, an unnamed boyfriend, wasn’t keen to have children.

Worse, according to Gemma, was her partner was apparently having an affair and the relationship broke down which she said was ‘a lot to deal with at that age.’

There was more tough news to come after her doctors discovered that her unborn baby was intersex.

Intersex is the modern term for the condition previously called hermaphrodite which is considered outdated, and refers to babies born with both male and female genitals, chromosomes and internal organs.

‘When I went to the doctor’s they said to me, “Something’s not right.”

‘It could only happen to me. Not only has the boyfriend met someone else and is already off… They said to me, ‘Your baby, could be, from looking at it, a hermaphrodite.

‘You could imagine, I didn’t know what the word was, I had to look it up.’

She continued ‘I had never been taught about hermaphrodites – didn’t know what they were! Didn’t know they existed! So that was a real shock. I can remember coming, and they advised me “You need to have a termination because this baby’s not gonna be right.”‘

A 2021 study by the University of Manchester found that 1.7 percent of the global population is intersex and that 1.1 million people in the UK are intersex making it as common as being a twin, reports The Independent.

She recounted how the situation was ‘very sad’ but ‘just not meant to be.’

Gemma, who has polycystic ovary syndrome, also became emotional as she shared that she also endured a second and third miscarriage in 2020.
