On a recent episode of the Always College Football podcast, ESPN’s Greg McElroy ran through an interesting exercise where he mixed together the best qualities from different quarterbacks around the country to build the perfect quarterback for the 2024 season.
McElroy started out by taking the arm, where he went with Carson Beck of the Georgia Bulldogs.
“I think Carson Beck is arguably the most talented passer returning in the sport this year. Now, does that necessarily mean he has the strongest arm, he has the quickest release, he has all these other things? Last year, arm would have gone to Joe Milton at Tennessee, but if you look at his efficiency it was not what you wanted it to be.”
Beck was fantastic in his first year as Georgia’s starter in 2023, throwing for 3,941 yards (third most in college football) and 24 touchdowns.
The former four-star recruits had big shoes to fill in replacing Stetson Bennett, and what he lacked in athleticism compared to Bennett, he more than made up for in arm talent.
McElroy acknowledged that Beck might not have the strongest arm in the entire nation, though it’s close, but the arm talent across the board goes to Beck. He also hinted that he thinks Beck could be the No. 1 player taken in next year’s NFL draft.
Arm talent across the board, I’m taking Carson Beck of the Georgia Bulldogs. Decided to return this year, think he would’ve been a top-ten pick. But I think next year he certainly has the inside track to possibly be the No. 1 overall pick in 2025.
