Brits wishing to holiday in the likes of Spain, Italy and France will have to pay an additional fee to enter the countries from next year. Tourists will be slapped with a visa waiver fee to enter EU countries under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), The European Commission confirmed.
The new scheme, which is due to launch in May 2023, requires travellers to renew their visa waiver every three years and it will allow unlimited entries into countries within the Schengen zone. This zone is made up of 26 European countries that have removed border controls between them.
The waiver will be needed for any trips that last up to 90 days within a relevant country and it must be obtained within at least 96 hours before departure from airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow. The EU said that British applicants under 18 or over 70 will not have to pay the ETIAS visa waiver.
The UK, which left the EU in 2020, is not the only country subjected to this fee – currently there are 60 others. The cost of the wavier will be €7 (around £6) and can be applied and paid for online, similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) Brits have pay for before entering the USA.
The scheme is designed to protect the Schengen zone in terms of international crime, terrorism, and health. All applicants will be screened using security databases such as Interpol and Europol, which will allow the authorities to identify people who pose a potential risk and prevent them from entering Europe.
Below is a list of all all the countries that Brits will need an ETIAS for:
