Board and party games, as well as craft toys, are very popular as Sinterklaas gifts this year. Toy sellers such as Lobbes.nl, web store bol.com, budget chain Action, drugstore and toy seller Kruidvat and online department store Wehkamp know. Consumers seem to be responding to having to sit at home more, now that restaurants and cultural institutions will have to close at 5 p.m. in the near future.

Kruidvat sees an increase in online demand for toys, accompanied by a doubling of the sale of board games and baby toys. In addition, this year for Sinterklaas there was a “remarkably large” demand for Pokémon, says a spokeswoman. This year mainly board games are bought. Gift sets for children, such as a shower gel or a toiletry bag with hair items, are also popular this year, according to Kruidvat. Bol.com ranks in the top 5 of popular toy gifts small card and dice games such as Qwixx, Beaverbende and Earthworms, Pokémon cards, board games, LEGO and craft supplies such as Aquabeads and markers.

According to the retailers, the peak in sales was mainly last week, around the popular shopping festivity Black Friday. Action, which does not have a webshop, noticed increased crowds in the stores in the week before the press conference. Now it is relatively quiet, says a spokesman. The budget chain has the impression that people are geared to the adjusted shopping hours. Craft items, games and puzzles are also doing well at Action. “That is partly because of the Sinterklaas surprises, but possibly also because of a period in which children come home again.”

Online toy seller Lobbes.nl also sees many orders for games and craft gifts during this Sinterklaas period. In addition to standard gifts such as Hot Wheels and Barbie, people also buy bricks to paint at the toy specialist. “That’s really a thing now,” says Berry de Snoo, operations manager.

Web department store Wehkamp notices that online sales, which have increased significantly in times of corona, remain structurally at a high level; that also applies to the Sinterklaas purchases. Last year, consumers increased their gift purchases around the holiday season amid fears of late delivery due to supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic. Wehkamp usually sells many toys and beauty items in the run-up to Sinterklaas. Paw Patrol is popular among toys, as are LEGO building sets and games. At beauty, both a men’s fragrance and a women’s perfume from Hugo Boss sell well. The Rituals gift set is also doing well, as every year, says a spokeswoman.
