Galway United survive late Derry City rally to claim vital point
Galway United made it back-to-back games unbeaten against the Candystripes this season following this draw in Eamonn Deacy Park.
John Caulfield’s men were well worthy of the point after dealing with late pressure from Derry.
The hosts started brightly and almost took the lead after 12 minutes when American Vincent Borden saw his effort saved by Candystripes netminder Brian Maher.
The men from the Oak Leaf county dominated much of the ball in the first half but really failed to make use of that possession in the last third, with Loughrea native Patrick Hoban not getting much change out of the Galway defence.
Derry started the second half the brighter but only created their first real chance of the half when Ben Doherty saw his powerful effort just go wide after 83 minutes.
Will Patching also hit the bar for Derry in the 90th minute. However, honours ended even in Eamonn Deacy Park.
Galway were once again solid at the back and will be happy with their performance. However, for Derry they will be disappointed they didn’t get more out of the game considering they had numerous good chances late on.
On Monday, Galway United will travel to play Bohemians at Dalymount Park at 5pm, while the Candystripes will welcome Damien Duff’s Shelbourne to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium at 7.45pm that night.
