how to, capitals vs. canucks preview: line combinations, injury report, storylines & how to watch

The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their best efforts of the season in Boston that put an end to a six-game losing streak, and they’ll look to keep the momentum going to gain ground in the East as they take on another Conference-leading team in the Vancouver Canucks.

Here’s everything to know before puck drop at Capital One Arena at 1:30 p.m. ET. on Super Bowl Sunday.

Washington Capitals Line Combinations

Head coach Spencer Carbery isn’t making any changes to the lines following Washington’s complete 60-minute showing in Boston, as he hopes the team can carry over the same effort.

The only switch will be in net, as Darcy Kuemper will start after Charlie Lindgren posted an 18-save shutout less than 24 hours earlier.

Here are the combinations:

Alex Ovechkin-Dylan Strome-T.J. Oshie

Aliaksei Protas-Connor McMichael-Anthony Mantha

Max Pacioretty-Michael Sgarbossa-Tom Wilson

Beck Malenstyn-Nic Dowd-Nicolas Aube-Kubel

Martin Fehervary-John Carlson

Rasmus Sandin-Nick Jensen

Joel Edmundson-Ethan Bear

Washington Capitals Injury Report

– Sonny Milano will miss his 25th consecutive contest as he continues to work his way back from an upper-body injury, though he is getting closer. The 26-year-old has not played in two months and was believed to be initially injured after taking a high hit from Jacob Trouba back on Dec. 9 against the New York Rangers.

– Evgeny Kuznetsov remains out indefinitely after entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

– Nicklas Backstrom is still on long-term injured reserve and is unlikely to play again this season after stepping away due to his hip not responding as he’d hoped following hip resurfacing surgery in June 2022.

– Trevor van Riemsdyk (illness) remains out of the lineup.

Washington Capitals Storylines

– Alex Ovechkin has goals in four straight games and 15 points in his last 13 outings. He scored his 57th empty-net goal on Saturday, passing Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history.

– Dylan Strome has four goals in his last five games and scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season on Saturday. He’s on pace for a career-high of 32 this season.

– Connor McMichael has power-play assists in back-to-back games.

How To Watch Capitals vs. Canucks
