Gabby Petito’s family announced that a memorial visitation open to the public would be held at a funeral home in Holbrook, New York this Sunday. Meanwhile, on Friday, police set out for the seventh day of their search for Brian Laundrie. On Thursday night, the FBI announced that a federal arrest warrant had been issued in relation to the death of Ms Petito.

“While this warrant allows law enforcement to arrest Mr Laundrie, the FBI and our partners across the country continue to investigate the facts and circumstances of Ms Petito’s homicide,” said Special Agent in charge Michael Schneider.

“We urge individuals with knowledge of Mr Laundrie’s role in this matter or his current whereabouts to contact the FBI.”

Earlier, a local law firm issued a press release offering a $20,000 reward for anyone with information leading to the exact location of Mr Laundrie. Co-workers of Mr Laundrie’s claimed he was well versed in outdoor survival, though there is little beyond anecdote to substantiate those claims.

Authorities have not said why they are convinced Laundrie, who police call a “person of interest” in the case, may still be somewhere inside the more than 24,000-acre Carlton Reserve near his home in North Port, Florida, more than a week after he told family members he was headed there to hike alone. The Carlton Reserve has more than 80 miles (128 km) of hiking trails but is dominated by swampy water.

Also on Wednesday, a witness came forward to describe a stand-up argument between Laundrie and a waitress at a restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, around the time Ms Petito is believed to have sent her final text to her mother.

If confirmed, it would be one of the last sightings of Ms Petito alive.

18:10 , Graig Graziosi

An ex-FBI national security expert told CNBC that he expects Brian Laundrie’s parents to be summoned before grand jury “momentarily.”

“I would expect that to happen momentarily, see them in front of a grand jury, and then if they are not going to cooperate, they can get charged with contempt or obstruction,” Frank Figliuzzi said. “There is no parental-child privilege, and I actually thought, by now, we would see them summoned to the grand jury. We now have an indictment, it’s a federal case.”

Yesterday, Mr Laundrie’s parents drove to Orlando after returning their son’s silver Mustang from the North Port police, who had towed the vehicle. The Laundrie’s attorney said they traveled there on business. Reporters at the scene noted that unmarked vehicles, presumably belonging to law enforcement, tailed the couple to Orlando and back.

Gabby Petito: A timeline of the social media star’s death

13:50 , Eleanor Sly

Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old YouTuber and Instagram star, went missing in late August, having embarked on a cross-country road trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, 23, that she was documenting on social media.

The couple grew up in Blue Point on Long Island in New York but lived together in North Port, Florida, setting out on a dream road trip from the Big Apple on 2 July in Ms Petito’s Ford Transit van and hoping to reach a friend’s house in Portland, Oregon, by Halloween.

However, Ms Petito’s family have not heard from their daughter since receiving text messages towards the end of last month that they have suggested may not have been written by her.

Where could Laundrie be?

13:17 , Eleanor Sly

In the ten days since Brian Laundrie vanished, there has been growing speculation over where he might be.

Police and FBI have been searching the Carlton Reserve in Florida, near to Mr Laundrie’s parents’ home, but with no trace of him reported thus far, some are suggesting that he could have fled.

“I don’t think he killed himself,” said Pat Diaz, a retired Miami-Dade homicide detective, reported Fox News. He added: “I think he’s just going to disappear.”

Dan Riemer, who is a West Palm-based private investigator, agreed.

“That search in the swamp is leading everyone to believe Brian is in the swamp, and no civilians are paying attention to who is around them,” Mr Riemer said.

“[The] focus needs to be on people being aware, [and] someone will see something, just like the campers who saw the van.”

There has been speculation that Mr Laundrie could have fled as far away as Mexico and some internet sleuths think he may be in Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, Mr Riemer said there’s a possibility that Mr Laundrie could have made it to South Florida. If this is the case, the private investigator suggested that he could try to hide in plain sight.

“They send their kids down here for rehab, then the kids leave rehab, and they hire me to find them,” he told Fox News on Thursday. “It’s amazing how they survive. No credit card, no physical signs of income, and they just make do.”

Laundrie and Petito’s relationship had ‘very high highs and very low lows’ say school friends

12:28 , Eleanor Sly

School friends of Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito said that the pair experienced “highs and lows” during their relationship, suggesting that there was “always some drama.”

Ms Petito and Mr Laundrie met whilst at high school in New York but broke up in 2016, after Mr Laundrie graduated.

They restarted their relationship just one year later when Ms Petito finished school, with friends saying that although the couple fell in and out of love, they didn’t see anything “concerning” between them.

Alyssa Chen told People magazine: “They had very high highs and very low lows. But she always said he was a good boyfriend.”

Meanwhile another school friend, Ben Matula said: “One minute, they’d be all over each other, the next minute he’d be like ‘We’re fighting. They always had some drama.”

Gabby Petito death: Arrest warrant for bank fraud issued for missing Brian Laundrie

11:53 , Eleanor Sly

A federal court has issued an arrest warrant for Brian Laundrie, the missing fiancé of Gabby Petito, the FBI has announced.

According to the bureau’s Denver, Colorado division, the warrant was issued on Wednesday.

“On September 22, 2021, the U.S. District Court of Wyoming issued a federal arrest warrant for Brian Christopher Laundrie pursuant to a Federal Grand Jury indictment related to Mr Laundrie’s activities following the death of Gabrielle Petito,” FBI Denver said in a tweet.

Laundrie’s warrant not for Petito’s death, says attorney

11:09 , Eleanor Sly

An attorney for Brian Laundrie’s family was keen to emphasise that the arrest warrant for Mr Laundrie is not for Gabby Petito’s death, but is related to activities that took place afterwards.

The US District Court of Wyoming issued an arrest warrant for Mr Laundrie, said the FBI’s Denver field office, after he was indicted by a grand jury for “use of unauthorised devices,” following Ms Petito’s death.

According to the indictment, Mr Laundrie illegally used a debit card and PIN number for charges totaling more than $1,000 (£730). The accounts which he used did not belong to him, while the transactions took place between the dates of 30 August and 1 September.

“It is my understanding that the arrest warrant for Brian Laundrie is related to activities occurring after the death of Gabby Petito and not related to her actual demise,” Steve Bertolino, an attorney for Mr Laundrie’s family said in a statement.

“The FBI is focusing on locating Brian and when that occurs the specifics of the charges covered under the indictment will be addressed in the proper forum.”

Laundrie could have been eaten in Carlton Reserve

10:26 , Eleanor Sly

Brian Laundrie may have been eaten by alligators in Carlton Reserve, says a survival expert.

Speaking to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Mark Burrow said that it was possible that Mr Laundrie could have been eaten by an alligator if he had become injured or was particularly exhausted.

Mr Burrow told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune: “They like to put a carcass under a log, and let it get all rotten.

“Then the gator would eat you slowly.”

Mr Burrow also suggested that coyotes or bobcats could pray on Mr Laundrie.

He added: “If he’s down there in the Carlton Reserve, he’s living in hell.

“People have been making a big deal of the alligators and the snakes, but it’s dehydration that’s the real danger.”

Former co-worker says Petito and Laundrie were ‘couple goals’

09:34 , Eleanor Sly

A former co-worker of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie said that she “never would expect this” from either of the pair and suggested that they were “couple goals.”

Nicole Kalanich, who worked at a local Publix Supermarket with the couple, told NBC 6: “The only thing I could say is they were ‘couple goals,

“They were very happy, never would expect this from Brian or Gabby.”

Ms Petito worked in the pharmacy of Publix Supermarket to save up for her travels, while Mr Laundrie worked in the grocery department.

“They were saving up for this trip, I guess because he got her in to work at Publix,” Ms Kalanich said.

She added: “She [Ms Petito] was very happy never sad honestly. She always had energy to travel. She was very excited for this trip.”

What is ‘Missing White Woman Syndrome’?

08:57 , Eleanor Sly

In the wake of Gabby Petito’s homicide, a number of experts have said that America is facing so-called Missing White Women Syndrome,” defined by the heavier attention that white women and girls receive from the media, should they go missing, compared to anyone outside this demographic.

This is according to a study published by the Northwestern University School of Law in 2016. It highlights how black people are less likely to gain attention from the media than other groups, should they go missing. The study also noted that when these groups do make the news, they tend to receive a lower intensity of coverage.

According to 2020 FBI data, black people make up 35 per cent of missing persons reports, but only account for 13 per cent of the US population. Meanwhile, white people constitute 54 per cent of those reported missing and 76 per cent of the US population.

Amid the ongoing manhunt for Brian Laundrie, a second woman has come forward to say that she gave him a ride while he was hitchhiking in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park on 29 August.

His fiancé, YouTuber Gabby Petito, was last seen in the region on 27 August at a Tex-Mex restaurant, where they allegedly had an argument.

Norma Jean Jalovec, a resident of Florida, said that she realised that she had picked up Mr Laundrie and dropped him off at the Spread Creek dispersed camping area after seeing a TikTok video.

Ms Haaland empathised with the Petito family and said that her heart goes out to them.

She however added that she also grieves for “so many Indigenous women″ whose families have endured similar heartache “for the last 500 years”.

The Gabby Petito disappearance and the subsequent categorisation of the case as homicide have generated a huge reaction online even as some critics described the media coverage as an example of “missing white woman syndrome”.

A report prepared by the state of Wyoming – where Petito’s body was found – showed that “at least 710 Native Americans were reported missing between 2011 and late 2020” in the state. It found that between 2010 and 2019, the homicide rate per 100,000 for Indigenous people was 26.8 — eight times higher than the homicide rate for white people.

‘In Pursuit with John Walsh’ host’s son comments on ‘mistakes’ made in Petito case

06:35 , Maroosha Muzaffar

The TV personality Callahan Walsh — co-host of ‘In Pursuit with John Walsh’ — believes that the law enforcement made “mistakes” in the Gabby Petito homicide case.

Walsh, who co-hosts the crime show with his father John Walsh, said that he believes Petito was in an abusive relationship with boyfriend Brian Laundrie. He pointed out that the police should have handled things “differently” when they responded to two emergency calls about the couple fighting.

He said: “When law enforcement showed up, they didn’t have that information of the caller saying they had seen Brian assaulting Gabby. Mistakes were absolutely made. Were those mistakes made intentionally? No. Law enforcement works off of — especially law enforcement officers out in the field — [they’re] working on the information that they get. When the police show up, it’s a scary situation. People are nervous.”

He added: “There were multiple accounts from multiple different witnesses that there was some sort of abuse going on between them. Who the aggressor was – that line blurs sometimes in domestic disputes.”

Walsh also said that he is convinced that 23-year-old Mr Laundrie is responsible for Petito’s death.

A federal arrest warrant for Mr Laundrie was issued by the FBI on Thursday.

Academic says Gabby Petito homicide coverage threatens to turn the case into ‘entertainment’

06:04 , Maroosha Muzaffar

A California State University academic has said that the Gabby Petito homicide coverage threatens to turn the case into “entertainment.”

Danielle Slakoff, who specialises in criminal justice and the media was quoted in the New York Times as saying that there were a number of reasons people were interested in the 22-year-old YouTuber’s case. She said that because Petito documented the road trip on her social media, “providing glimpses of her life,” people wanted to feel that they were “part of the story” by helping to solve her disappearance.

Prof Slakoff pointed out that research and her own work has shown that “white missing women and girls do receive more initial coverage and they do receive more repeated coverage.”

She said that white women in the media were usually portrayed as “good people” while women of colour were often depicted as risk-takers or “somehow complicit in their own disappearances.”

Emphasising the media coverage, she pointed out: “I don’t think we can discount the profit motive and the fact that, historically, these types of stories have gotten tons of engagement, viewers and clicks. So I do think it could be argued that it’s kind of this vicious cycle.”

Brian Laundrie left home without cellphone and wallet, source says

05:35 , Maroosha Muzaffar

Brian Laundrie left his parents’ home in North Port, Florida, without his mobile phone or wallet, an anonymous close friend of the Laundrie family has told CNN.

A federal arrest warrant has been issued for Mr Laundrie who was reported missing by his parents last Tuesday.

The source also revealed to CNN’s Chris Cuomo that Mr Laundrie’s parents feared that he might hurt himself.

Gabby Petito’s remains were found on Sunday in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming and the FBI said that she was a victim of homicide.

Meanwhile, Brian Laundrie’s parents returned from a trip to Orlando on Thursday. Reports said that they were there to meet their lawyer.

QAnon channels calling Gabby Petito homicide a ‘false flag’

05:10 , Maroosha Muzaffar

Several QAnon channels are claiming that the attention given to the Gabby Petito case is a “false flag” operation to distract from president Joe Biden’s “failures”.

Some conspiracy theorists have come up with their own elaborate theories about the 22-year-old’s disappearance, with suggestions that Petito never even existed, or was played by an actor.

Earlier this week, Petito was declared a victim of a homicide and the FBI has issued an arrest warrant for her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie.

The search for Mr Laundrie in Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County was halted on Thursday and police said they’ll resume the search on Friday.

Second woman says she gave Brian Laundrie a ride

04:38 , Maroosha Muzaffar

A second woman has come up with information about Brian Laundrie, claiming that she gave him a ride on 29 August in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

Norma Jean Jalovec is the second woman — after Miranda Baker — to give “missing” Brian Laundrie a ride during his hitchhiking, just two days after Gabby Petito was last seen.

Ms Jalovec told Fox News that she dropped him off around 6.30 or 6.40 pm local time at the Spread Creek dispersed camping area, where Petito’s remains were discovered weeks later.

Meanwhile, an arrest warrant was also issued for Mr Laundrie and a North Port law firm is offering a $20,000 reward for anyone with information that could help find him.

“Therefore, I do not represent him or anyone else related to the case” he told the outlet.

More questionable reports of Brain Laundrie sightings – this time in Canada

Thursday 23 September 2021 18:11 , Graig Graziosi

A TikTok user going by the name @cwlynnn claimed in a TikTok video on Wednesday that she saw a man that resembled Brian Laundrie who was acting “flustered.”

The witness claims she told the hotel staff about the man’s apparent similarity to Mr Laundrie. The hotel staffer allegedly told her that the man she was describing did not know where he was and had come to the wrong hotel.

The woman in the video claims she told the FBI about the possible sighting and reported it to the local media in Canada.

There is no indication that the FBI or any Canadian authorities have taken the tip – first reported on by The Sun – seriously. There have been at least two other sightings of Mr Laundrie that have not panned out despite receiving loads of attention from people following the search.

A witness told police they saw a man resembling Mr Laundrie near Tillman’s Corner, Alabama. Police found no evidence of Mr Laundrie anywhere in the area.

Later, trail cam footage captured an image of a hiker who resembled Mr Laundrie. After police investigated the area they found the man who was captured by the trail camera and confirmed it was not Mr Laundrie.

Gary Rider, a friend of Gabby’s stepfather Jim Schmidt, said the pair had visited the site on Wednesday and that they had left some flowers next to the other cross. “We did go – the small cross with flowers was made by Jim and myself,” Mr Rider told The Independent.

Search for Brian Laundrie enters sixth day

Thursday 23 September 2021 07:32 , Sam Hancock

The exhaustive search for Gabby Petito’s fiance in a vast Florida wilderness entered its sixth day this morning.

A team of divers joined police and FBI agents using boats and helicopters looking for Brian Laundrie, 23, in the alligator-infested Carlton Reserve on Wednesday, but a spokesman said at nightfall that they had found “nothing” to show for their efforts, according to Reuters.

Authorities have not said why they are convinced Laundrie, who police call a “person of interest” in the case, may still be somewhere inside the more than 24,000-acre preserve near his home in North Port, Florida, more than a week after he told family members he was headed there to hike alone.

North Port police say Laundrie’s parents did not report him missing until 14 September, three days after the family last saw him. The Carlton Reserve has more than 80 miles (128 km) of hiking trails but is dominated by swampy water.

The body of Ms Petito, 22, was discovered on Sunday in a remote corner of the Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming, less than 1,000 feet from where, on the evening of 27 August, another pair of travel bloggers caught video images of the couple’s white Ford Transit parked on a dirt road.

In identifying her remains, Teton County medical examiners ruled Ms Petito’s death a homicide, but did not make the cause of her death public.

The search for Laundrie continues.

Mr Matula, describing their relationship when they were teenagers in Long Island said: “They always had some drama.” He added: “There was always something below the surface where things weren’t 100 per cent wonderful.”

A friend of Petito, Alyssa Chen said that their “on-again, off-again relationship” had “many ups and downs.” She said: “When they were bad, you’d be like ‘Oh my God, just break up and spare yourself from the drama and everyone else from having to hear about it.’”

Experts said that this could be “crucial” in the search for Mr Laundrie claiming that “if he’s in there, the odds of finding him go up dramatically.”

The 23-year-old boyfriend of “homicide victim” Gabby Petito has been hiding in the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, officials believe.

Former FBI agent says timing of naming Laundrie a ‘suspect’ could be strategic

Thursday 23 September 2021 04:46 , Maroosha Muzaffar

A former FBI agent has said that Brian Laundrie could already be a “suspect” in the Gabby Petito homicide case without the public’s knowledge.

Mr Laundrie has only been named as a person of interest in the case.

RJ Toledo said in an interview with 10 Tampa Bay that “just because we haven’t been told he’s [Mr Laundrie] a suspect doesn’t mean he isn’t in the eyes of the investigators at this time”.

He added that “it could very well be [that he is]. Because there are these investigative and legal steps that need to be taken. There are reasons why a person can still be considered a person of interest and not formally be named a suspect.”

The former intelligence officer also said that the “arrest warrant could be in process, the arrest warrant could be imminent.”

Mr Laundrie was reported missing by his parents last week and police have been combing through the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County to find him.

Caleb Key and his mother Marianne had been determined to pay their respects to Gabby Petito ever since they heard her body had been found on this quiet mountainside.

Yesterday Yelp had shut down its page for my firm due to inordinate and unconfirmed posts,” he wrote. “I would certainly agree with Mr. Stafford that any such post he is referring to should be removed but advise him that I have no control over that Yelp site.”
