LIVE – Updated at 15:13

A major search is still underway in Florida for ‘person of interest’ Brian Laundrie, after the FBI announced they found a body believed to be missing van-life blogger Gabby Petito in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park.

The body was found close to the site where a couple claimed to have seen the van Ms Petito and her fiancé had been travelling in together.

The couple said they saw the van on 25 August, which narrowed the potential search area for investigators. They did not see Ms Petito or her fiancé. However, Ms Petito did tag numerous potential campsites on an app called The Dyrt, which may provide insight into the general area she planned to explore on her trip.

In Florida, protesters gathered outside Mr Laundrie’s house late this week, hoping to pressure him into cooperating with law enforcement. Ms Petito’s family called on Mr Laundrie’s family to help them find their daughter.

However, it came to light that Mr Laundrie had left the house on Tuesday and was last seen in a vast swampy nature reserve near the city of North Port. Local police and the FBI are currently searching for him in the park.

On Wednesday, the North Port Police Department in Florida announced they were treating Ms Petito’s fiancé as a person of interest in their investigation. He has thus far refused to cooperate with law enforcement.

The family of Ms Petito have also revealed they do not believe her final text message on 30 August actually came from her.

Ms Petito and her fiancé were reportedly arguing and hitting each other, according to a police report from Utah. The couple, who were on a road trip in Ms Petito’s van, were spotted having an argument in Moab City, Utah on 12 August.

Bodycamera footage of a police encounter with the couple shows Ms Petito crying over the argument she and Mr Laundrie had been having during their trip.

Ms Petito disappeared while on a road trip with her fiancé, Mr Laundrie, who returned without her, prompting a frantic search for the 22-year-old woman that began on 11 September.

Investigators seek information from anyone who saw blogger or boyfriend at camping sites

08:00 , Chiara Giordano

An undeveloped camping area on the east side of Grand Teton bordering national forest land will remain closed until further notice while the investigation continues.

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Charles Jones said investigators were still seeking information from anyone who may have seen Gabby Petito or boyfriend Brian Laundrie around camping sites in the area of Spread Creek, where law enforcement search efforts focused over the weekend.

The pair left in July on a cross-country trek in a converted van to visit national parks in the US West.

Mr Laundrie was alone when he drove the van back to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida, on September 1, police said.

More than 50 law enforcement officers on Sunday started a second day of searching for Mr Laundrie at the more than 24,000-acre (9,712-hectare) Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, Florida, a wildlife area with more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) of trails, as well as campgrounds.

FBI say public assistance ‘vital’ to finding body in Wyoming

07:21 , Maroosha Muzaffar

The FBI on Sunday thanked the public for its assistance and told The Independent that “it was vital” to finding the remains believed to be of Gabby Petito.

At a news conference in Wyoming, FBI official Charles Jones said that “we appreciate the tremendous support from the public”, describing the response to a request for tips as “remarkable”.

Mr Jones said that the agency continues to “seek information from anyone who utilised the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area between the dates of 27 August and 30 August”.

It comes after a couple who were also on a road trip across America posted a video showing the van that Gabby Petito and her boyfriend had parked at the campsite. Even though the number plate was not visible in the Youtube footage, the similarities had led to widespread online speculation.

The couple had said they hoped that the FBI would look into it.

Digital detectives want to help solve the Gabby Petito mystery

05:53 , Maroosha Muzaffar

The disappearance of Gabby Petito has created sleuths out of ordinary Americans, with Reddit threads and other conversations online showing hundreds of people are combing through any evidence they can find for clues.

These include detailed discussions of the social media posts from Ms Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie, who has been declared a “person of interest” and is now being looked for by the authorities himself.

CNN reported that these citizen sleuths are presenting themselves as assisting official investigators – analysing photos and Google maps for any useful information.

It comes amid a huge online interest in Ms Petito’s disappearance.

The FBI said a body matching her description was found in Wyoming at the weekend, with an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday.

On TikTok, the hashtag “Gabby Petito” has more than 275 million views, Prof David Zurawik, professor of media studies at Goucher College, told CNN on Sunday.

He said this kind of “interactivity” is a “fascinating cultural way of how we engage with true crime stories.”

However, he also cautioned that the work of such digital sleuths can sometimes lead to “confusion”.

Fiancé Brian Laundrie could potentially hide in Florida reserve swamps ‘for months’ say police

Sunday 19 September 2021 16:30 , Helen.Elfer

North Port Police Department spokesperson Josh Taylor has said that it’s possible Brian Laundrie could hide out in the swamps of the Carlton Reserve “for months.”

The fiancé of Gabby Petito, who has also gone missing, is thought to have headed to Florida’s Carlton Reserve. His family told investigators they believe he entered the area earlier this week.

“It’s muddy, it’s wet, there are a few unpaved dirt roads that are out there basically running along the power lines,” Mr Taylor said.

“You could be out here for months if you wanted,” he added.

Family members said they believed Laundrie went to the reserve with only a backpack and that he took his car, although the vehicle was found at the family home, adding to the many questions that surround his disappearance.

“Certainly we prepare for all different possibilities, but our goal is to locate him and bring him back to North Port,” Mr Taylor said.

FBI have video believed to show Gabby Petito’s van in Grand Teton National Park

Sunday 19 September 2021 15:14 , Helen.Elfer

Gabby Petito’s family have posted a notice on the Find Gabby Facebook page saying a video that shows a white van at a campground in Grand Teton National Park on August 27 is with the FBI.

The vehicle in the footage appears to be the converted camper van that Ms Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie had been living in as they travelled across the country before Ms Petito’s disappearance.

The post said: “We believe this is the van for multiple reasons. Please do not clog up the tip line with the same video. This is in the hands of the right people,” adding “Thank you so much, this is exactly why we are asking people to review older photos and video.”

A family found the clip after looking through recordings they had taken while in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area of the park on August 27.

They posted the footage on YouTube with a caption explaining it had been taken in the camping area in the early evening that day.

“We had passed by a white van with Florida Plates. We noticed it because we are originally from Florida and wanted to stop and say hi. When we passed the van, all the lights were off and it didn’t look like anyone was there. We ended up leaving because we couldn’t find a spot,” the caption read.

If the footage can be confirmed to be showing Gabby Petito’s van, it could potentially help narrow down the search for investigators.

Search for Laundrie continues in Florida

Saturday 18 September 2021 21:54 , Oliver O’Connell

More than 50 law enforcement officers are now using bloodhounds, drones and offroad vehicles are searching for Brian Laundrie in Carlton Reserve, a swampy woodland north of the city of North Port.

Mr Laundrie often visits the Myakkahatchee Creek Environment Park, which is tied to the 25,000 acre Carlton Reserve, according to North Port Police information chief Josh Taylor. He told his parents that was where he was going when he left their house.

Mr Taylor said that up to six different agencies were searching for Mr Laundrie. “We have had drones in the air, we have got bloodhounds, K9s, four by four vehicles. It’s very wet, it’s muddy. There are a few unpaved dirt roads. It’s a place that people hike. There are mountain bike trails out here. The Myakkahatchee Creek runs down into the city.”

Explaining the focus of the search, Mr Taylor said that they began in the park area which is about 200 acres in size through which Mr Laundrie entered. There is then a bridge into the 25,000 acres of reserve land beyond that. The park is closed to the public.

When asked if he believed there were concerns for Mr Laundrie’s safety, he said: “Sure, I think that’s fair to say. There is an enormous amount of pressure I’m sure on him to provide answers on what’s going on here.”

Mr Schmidt took a deep breath before replying: “I’m not sure.”

He continued, “We’re happy they called the police in, and they want to cooperate… but I’m not going to speculate. I don’t know what to believe.”

Mr Laundrie’s family have told investigators they believe he entered the Carlton Reserve in Florida earlier this week, but no more information about his whereabouts has been released.

“All I want is for her to come home safe” says Brian Laundrie’s sister.

The sister of Gabby Petito’s fiancé Brian Laundrie, has said: “all I want is for her to come home safe.”

The Laundrie family has come under fire for being uncooperative with the investigation so far, particularly in not reporting that Brian Laundrie had also gone missing until several days after they last saw him.

In her interview with GMA, Ms Laundrie said she had spoken to police but not with her brother. “I wish I could talk to him,” she said. “I’ve cooperated every way that I can. I wish I had information or I would give more.”

Mother says final text from Ms Petito was ‘fake’

Saturday 18 September 2021 20:20 , Helen.Elfer

In a press conference on Friday, police spokesperson Josh Taylor confirmed that police do not have Gabby Petito’s cellphone.

Who was behind the phone activity from Ms Petito’s number remains a crucial question in the case, as Ms Petito’s mother Nicole Schmidt has said she believes the text she received from her daughter’s number on 30 August was sent from someone else.

Ms Schmidt said she received a text message which said: “No service in Yosemite.” Ms Petito’s last confirmed location was in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on 25 August, 800 miles away from Yosemite. The Grand Teton National Park is now the main area being focused on in the hunt for Ms Petito.

Ms Schmidt told the Daily Mail she was certain the text message had been faked and suspected her daughter’s fiancé Brian Laundrie may have sent it to deceive the family.

“That text was NOT from Gabby I know it!” she told the Mail.

Saturday 18 September 2021 19:31 , Helen.Elfer

A GoFundMe page launched to support the family of Gabby Petito has already received almost $62k in donations from well-wishers.

The fundraising effort was launched five days ago by a longtime friend of the family, Gary Rider, who wrote:

“I have watched Gabby grow up and I consider her and the Schmidt family an extension of my own family. I started this fundraiser with the family’s permission to raise money to cover any and all expenses related to the investigation and search so that we may bring Gabby home.”

Mr Rider explained that money raised would be used to pay for expenses directly related to the search efforts and. additional resources that the family needed.

The page has a fundraising goal of $75k, and Mr Rider wrote: “Any unused funds will be donated to a charity of the family choosing upon completion of our stated goal.”

As of Saturday, as many as 1,500 people had donated to the fund.

A post on the Facebook page Where’s Gabby? warned that Ms Petito’s family had been made aware of fake fundraising efforts in their name, and had confirmed only two were authorised – the GoFundMe page and an effort at https://www.johnnymacfoundation.org.

Police express “frustration” with family of Brian Laundrie

Saturday 18 September 2021 19:19 , Helen.Elfer

Police have expressed frustration that Brian Laundrie’s family did not report him missing for days after he disappeared.

According to his family, the fiancé of 22-year-old Gabby Petito has not been seen since Tuesday, in a twist that infuriated many involved in the search for her.

Police spokesperson Josh Taylor told CNN on Friday: “We’ve been trying all week to talk to his family, to talk to Brian, and now they’ve called us here on Friday, we’ve gone to the home, and they’re saying now they have not seen their son.”

He added: “So we are working through those details as we speak. It is another twist in this story.”

In a statement posted on Twitter, the North Port Police Department said: “We understand the community’s frustration, we are frustrated too,” continuing: “For six days, the North Port Police Department and the FBI have been pleading with the family to contact investigators regarding Brian’s fiancée Gabby Petito. Friday is the first time they have spoken with investigators in detail.”

Search for Gabby Petito now largely focusing on the Grand Teton National Park

Saturday 18 September 2021 18:45 , Helen.Elfer

The search for Gabby Petito is now largely focusing on the Grand Teton National Park where rangers continue to hunt for the missing 22-year-old, as family and authorities say they are confident she reached the park.

A Grand Teton Park Ranger told the Daily Mail: “There is a group of park rangers that is searching for Gabby Petito in the backcountry of the park,” adding “This is the park’s elite search and rescue unit.”

The ranger said: “I believe there may also be a search going on in a remote area of Yellowstone National Park.”

The backcountry of Grand Teton National Park consists of several hundred square miles on the west side of the region, and is a remote, hike-in area only.

“Members of search unit at the park can be airlifted to various remote areas for a search,” explained the ranger.

Ms Petito’s stepfather, Jim Schmidt said the family believes she made it to the area but can’t be certain sure where she ended up staying on arrival.

There are numerous campsites in the remote reaches of the Grand Teton/Jackson area, some where mobile reception is patchy and others which are off-the-grid entirely.

Timeline: Everything we know so far

Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old YouTuber and Instagram star, has been missing since late August, having embarked on a cross-country road trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, 23, that she was documenting on social media.

The couple grew up in Blue Point on Long Island in New York but lived together in North Port, Florida, setting out on a dream road trip from the Big Apple on 2 July in Ms Petito’s Ford Transit van and hoping to reach a friend’s house in Portland, Oregon, by Halloween.

However, Ms Petito’s family have not heard from their daughter since receiving text messages towards the end of last month that they have suggested may not have been written by her.

Mr Laundrie returned to North Port alone on 1 September.

Concerned for her daughter, Nicole Schmidt contacted police and a missing person’s investigation commenced on 11 September.

“It’s not that you’re not even helping anymore, it’s that you’re hindering this investigation. You’re using up resources and people’s time and it’s been beyond days that you could have talked and you’re still choosing to keep silent,” she said. “It’s reprehensible.”

Internet sensationalists speculate on Yellowstone’s “Zone of Death”

Friday 17 September 2021 20:15 , Graig Graziosi

A portion of Yellowstone National Park colloquially known as the “Zone of Death” has become a topic of conversation among amateur sleuths following the Gabby Petito disappearance online thanks to sensational claims that someone could commit a murder in the area and get away with it due to an inability to gather a jury, as no one lives there and it is under different state and federal jurisdictions.

Ms Petito’s last known location was in Grand Teton National Park, though she may have been on her way to Yellowstone at some point after that. Her final text to her mother says “No service in Yosemite.” It is possible Ms Petito – or whoever sent the text, as her family does not believe she sent the message – intended to say “Yellowstone,” as Yosemite would have been 12 hours away from their last known location. Yellowstone National Park is adjacent to Grand Teton National Park.

Either way, murder is not technically legal in the “Zone of Death.” Though it is unprecedented, if a murder occurred in the Zone of Death it would be prosecuted. Jurisdiction would have to be established, which would also establish precedent for cases originating from the area.
