Separate searches are underway in Wyoming and Florida for missing YouTuber Gabby Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie.

A couple claims they saw Ms Petito’s van near Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

The couple said they saw the van on 25 August, narrowing the potential search area for investigators if they deem the tip credible. They did not see Ms Petito or her fiancé. However, Ms Petito did tag numerous potential campsites on an app called The Dyrt, which may provide insight into the general area she planned to explore on her trip.

In Florida, protesters gathered outside Mr Laundrie’s house late this week, hoping to pressure him into cooperating with law enforcement. Ms Petito’s family called on Mr Laundrie’s family to help them find their daughter.

However, it came to light that Mr Laundrie had left the house on Tuesday and was last seen in a vast swampy nature reserve near the city of North Port. Local police and the FBI are currently searching for him in the park.

On Wednesday, the North Port Police Department in Florida announced they were treating Ms Petito’s fiancé as a person of interest in their investigation. He has thus far refused to cooperate with law enforcement.

The family of Ms Petito have also revealed they do not believe her final text message on 30 August actually came from her.

Ms Petito and her fiancé were reportedly arguing and hitting each other, according to a police report from Utah. The couple, who were on a road trip in Ms Petito’s van, were spotted having an argument in Moab City, Utah on 12 August.

Bodycamera footage of a police encounter with the couple shows Ms Petito crying over the argument she and Mr Laundrie had been having during their trip.

Ms Petito disappeared while on a road trip with her fiancé, Mr Laundrie, who returned without her, prompting a frantic search for the 22-year-old woman that began on 11 September.

Search teams seem to be adding aerial surveillance to the efforts to find Gabby Petito.

The Independent’s correspondent on the ground Andrew Buncombe reports that the FBI appear to be bringing in a helicopter to the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area, where the search is now focused.

The Spread Creek area in Bridger-Teton National Forest is on the east boundary of Grand Teton National Park. It has been closed to the public since yesterday evening, as the FBI and law enforcement partners continue to comb the area.

Sniffer dogs are also being used to cover the ground, and park rangers were seen bringing an inflatable raft onto the site.

Former FBI agent says domestic homicide ‘red flags’ apply to Brian Laundrie

17:23 , Helen.Elfer

A former FBI agent has said two ‘huge red flags’ that apply to Brian Laundrie pop up regularly in domestic homicide cases.

Speaking on ABC News, former FBI agent Brad Garrett said:

‘He obviously is the key to this case. There are two huge red flags with him: he didn’t report her missing and he isn’t helping the police. Who would do that with somebody that you are engaged to, that you are in love with?”

Mr Garrett added: “Those are two variables that pop up regularly in domestic homicide cases. We don’t know that that’s the case here, I’m just suggesting there are a lot of red flags.”

YouTube couple may have discovered proof van was at site being searched by FBI

16:50 , Helen.Elfer

Footage thought to be of Gabby Petito and her fiancé’s van could help both tighten the timeline and narrow the locations for investigators searching for the pair.

A couple posted a clip on YouTube that they say shows the white Force Transit van used by Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie parked at the campsite currently being searched by the FBI.

It was parked on the side of the so-called dispersed campsite at Spread Creek Road, about 20 miles north of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

This was the campsite being searched on Saturday by dozens of agents from the FBI, the National Park Service and other agencies.

The video was posted by Jenn and Kyle Bethune, who transformed a 1983 silver eagle bus to hit the road, and post video updates at their page Red White & Bethune, which is subtitled “Showing America through our Lens”.

Fiancé Brian Laundrie could potentially hide in Florida reserve swamps ‘for months’ say police

16:30 , Helen.Elfer

North Port Police Department spokesperson Josh Taylor has said that it’s possible Brian Laundrie could hide out in the swamps of the Carlton Reserve “for months.”

The fiancé of Gabby Petito, who has also gone missing, is thought to have headed to Florida’s Carlton Reserve. His family told investigators they believe he entered the area earlier this week.

“It’s muddy, it’s wet, there are a few unpaved dirt roads that are out there basically running along the power lines,” Mr Taylor said.

“You could be out here for months if you wanted,” he added.

Family members said they believed Laundrie went to the reserve with only a backpack and that he took his car, although the vehicle was found at the family home, adding to the many questions that surround his disappearance.

“Certainly we prepare for all different possibilities, but our goal is to locate him and bring him back to North Port,” Mr Taylor said.

The video of her in 2019, which was recorded by the café’s general manager for the venue’s anniversary, shows her relatively calm and at ease compared to recent police bodycam footage.

The police footage showed her extremely distressed after an incident with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, before she went missing.

FBI have video believed to show Gabby Petito’s van in Grand Teton National Park

15:14 , Helen.Elfer

Gabby Petito’s family have posted a notice on the Find Gabby Facebook page saying a video that shows a white van at a campground in Grand Teton National Park on August 27 is with the FBI.

The vehicle in the footage appears to be the converted camper van that Ms Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie had been living in as they travelled across the country before Ms Petito’s disappearance.

The post said: “We believe this is the van for multiple reasons. Please do not clog up the tip line with the same video. This is in the hands of the right people,” adding “Thank you so much, this is exactly why we are asking people to review older photos and video.”

A family found the clip after looking through recordings they had taken while in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area of the park on August 27.

They posted the footage on YouTube with a caption explaining it had been taken in the camping area in the early evening that day.

“We had passed by a white van with Florida Plates. We noticed it because we are originally from Florida and wanted to stop and say hi. When we passed the van, all the lights were off and it didn’t look like anyone was there. We ended up leaving because we couldn’t find a spot,” the caption read.

If the footage can be confirmed to be showing Gabby Petito’s van, it could potentially help narrow down the search for investigators.

Saturday 18 September 2021 21:54 , Oliver O’Connell

More than 50 law enforcement officers are now using bloodhounds, drones and offroad vehicles are searching for Brian Laundrie in Carlton Reserve, a swampy woodland north of the city of North Port.

Mr Laundrie often visits the Myakkahatchee Creek Environment Park, which is tied to the 25,000 acre Carlton Reserve, according to North Port Police information chief Josh Taylor. He told his parents that was where he was going when he left their house.

Mr Taylor said that up to six different agencies were searching for Mr Laundrie. “We have had drones in the air, we have got bloodhounds, K9s, four by four vehicles. It’s very wet, it’s muddy. There are a few unpaved dirt roads. It’s a place that people hike. There are mountain bike trails out here. The Myakkahatchee Creek runs down into the city.”

Explaining the focus of the search, Mr Taylor said that they began in the park area which is about 200 acres in size through which Mr Laundrie entered. There is then a bridge into the 25,000 acres of reserve land beyond that. The park is closed to the public.

When asked if he believed there were concerns for Mr Laundrie’s safety, he said: “Sure, I think that’s fair to say. There is an enormous amount of pressure I’m sure on him to provide answers on what’s going on here.”

Saturday 18 September 2021 20:58 , Helen.Elfer

In an interview with CNN, Gabby Petito’s stepfather Jim Schmidt, was asked if he believed that the Laundrie family did not know where Ms Petito’s fiancé Brian Laundrie was.

Mr Schmidt took a deep breath before replying: “I’m not sure.”

He continued, “We’re happy they called the police in, and they want to cooperate… but I’m not going to speculate. I don’t know what to believe.”

Mr Laundrie’s family have told investigators they believe he entered the Carlton Reserve in Florida earlier this week, but no more information about his whereabouts has been released.

“All I want is for her to come home safe” says Brian Laundrie’s sister.

Saturday 18 September 2021 20:34 , Helen.Elfer

The sister of Gabby Petito’s fiancé Brian Laundrie, has said: “all I want is for her to come home safe.”

In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, Cassie Laundrie said: “Obviously me and my family want Gabby to be found safe,” adding “She’s like a sister and my children love her, and all I want is for her to come home safe and sound and this to be just a big misunderstanding.”

The Laundrie family has come under fire for being uncooperative with the investigation so far, particularly in not reporting that Brian Laundrie had also gone missing until several days after they last saw him.

In her interview with GMA, Ms Laundrie said she had spoken to police but not with her brother. “I wish I could talk to him,” she said. “I’ve cooperated every way that I can. I wish I had information or I would give more.”

Mother says final text from Ms Petito was ‘fake’

Saturday 18 September 2021 20:20 , Helen.Elfer

In a press conference on Friday, police spokesperson Josh Taylor confirmed that police do not have Gabby Petito’s cellphone.

Who was behind the phone activity from Ms Petito’s number remains a crucial question in the case, as Ms Petito’s mother Nicole Schmidt has said she believes the text she received from her daughter’s number on 30 August was sent from someone else.

Ms Schmidt said she received a text message which said: “No service in Yosemite.” Ms Petito’s last confirmed location was in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on 25 August, 800 miles away from Yosemite. The Grand Teton National Park is now the main area being focused on in the hunt for Ms Petito.

Ms Schmidt told the Daily Mail she was certain the text message had been faked and suspected her daughter’s fiancé Brian Laundrie may have sent it to deceive the family.

“That text was NOT from Gabby I know it!” she told the Mail.

Gabby Petito’s GoFundMe page raises almost $62k in donations

Saturday 18 September 2021 19:31 , Helen.Elfer

A GoFundMe page launched to support the family of Gabby Petito has already received almost $62k in donations from well-wishers.

The fundraising effort was launched five days ago by a longtime friend of the family, Gary Rider, who wrote:

“I have watched Gabby grow up and I consider her and the Schmidt family an extension of my own family. I started this fundraiser with the family’s permission to raise money to cover any and all expenses related to the investigation and search so that we may bring Gabby home.”

Mr Rider explained that money raised would be used to pay for expenses directly related to the search efforts and. additional resources that the family needed.

The page has a fundraising goal of $75k, and Mr Rider wrote: “Any unused funds will be donated to a charity of the family choosing upon completion of our stated goal.”

As of Saturday, as many as 1,500 people had donated to the fund.

A post on the Facebook page Where’s Gabby? warned that Ms Petito’s family had been made aware of fake fundraising efforts in their name, and had confirmed only two were authorised – the GoFundMe page and an effort at https://www.johnnymacfoundation.org.

Police express “frustration” with family of Brian Laundrie

Saturday 18 September 2021 19:19 , Helen.Elfer

Police have expressed frustration that Brian Laundrie’s family did not report him missing for days after he disappeared.

According to his family, the fiancé of 22-year-old Gabby Petito has not been seen since Tuesday, in a twist that infuriated many involved in the search for her.

Police spokesperson Josh Taylor told CNN on Friday: “We’ve been trying all week to talk to his family, to talk to Brian, and now they’ve called us here on Friday, we’ve gone to the home, and they’re saying now they have not seen their son.”

He added: “So we are working through those details as we speak. It is another twist in this story.”

In a statement posted on Twitter, the North Port Police Department said: “We understand the community’s frustration, we are frustrated too,” continuing: “For six days, the North Port Police Department and the FBI have been pleading with the family to contact investigators regarding Brian’s fiancée Gabby Petito. Friday is the first time they have spoken with investigators in detail.”

Mr Laundrie’s disappearance was confirmed by his family’s lawyer, who released a statement on Friday saying that his whereabouts “are currently unknown.”

Search for Gabby Petito now largely focusing on the Grand Teton National Park

Saturday 18 September 2021 18:45 , Helen.Elfer

The search for Gabby Petito is now largely focusing on the Grand Teton National Park where rangers continue to hunt for the missing 22-year-old, as family and authorities say they are confident she reached the park.

A Grand Teton Park Ranger told the Daily Mail: “There is a group of park rangers that is searching for Gabby Petito in the backcountry of the park,” adding “This is the park’s elite search and rescue unit.”

The ranger said: “I believe there may also be a search going on in a remote area of Yellowstone National Park.”

The backcountry of Grand Teton National Park consists of several hundred square miles on the west side of the region, and is a remote, hike-in area only.

“Members of search unit at the park can be airlifted to various remote areas for a search,” explained the ranger.

Ms Petito’s stepfather, Jim Schmidt said the family believes she made it to the area but can’t be certain sure where she ended up staying on arrival.

There are numerous campsites in the remote reaches of the Grand Teton/Jackson area, some where mobile reception is patchy and others which are off-the-grid entirely.

Mr Laundrie returned to North Port alone on 1 September.

Concerned for her daughter, Nicole Schmidt contacted police and a missing person’s investigation commenced on 11 September.

She said that he once took Gabby’s ID so she couldn’t go out with Rose to a line-dancing event.

Rose told the Mail that Gabby returned home and confronted him, and that he then admitted to taking her ID.

She added: “She was so hysterical. She told me she slapped him and said something about him pushing her.

“She was holding back. I told her you need to tell me the deep of what happened and she just wouldn’t.”

Saturday 18 September 2021 12:57 , Lamiat Sabin

North Port Police have said that they have received more than 1,000 tips from the public amid their investigation into the disappearance of Gabby Petito.

The force’s Public Information Officer Josh Taylor said they have received an “enormous” amount of tips.

He said, according to the PIX11 news website: “The vast majority of them are not helpful.”

But, he added, “nuggets” of information – such as vehicles being in certain locations at certain times – could lead to “one more piece in our timeline.”

Mr Taylor also said: “So certainly there’s been progress made throughout the last 24 hours and – I don’t know if we’re to the point where we’ve got it solved by any means but the goal right now is to bring Gabby home and that’s what we’re going to continue to promote.”

He also confirmed during the news conference that the police force does not have Gabby’s mobile phone.

Internet sensationalists speculate on Yellowstone’s “Zone of Death”

Friday 17 September 2021 20:15 , Graig Graziosi

A portion of Yellowstone National Park colloquially known as the “Zone of Death” has become a topic of conversation among amateur sleuths following the Gabby Petito disappearance online thanks to sensational claims that someone could commit a murder in the area and get away with it due to an inability to gather a jury, as no one lives there and it is under different state and federal jurisdictions.

Ms Petito’s last known location was in Grand Teton National Park, though she may have been on her way to Yellowstone at some point after that. Her final text to her mother says “No service in Yosemite.” It is possible Ms Petito – or whoever sent the text, as her family does not believe she sent the message – intended to say “Yellowstone,” as Yosemite would have been 12 hours away from their last known location. Yellowstone National Park is adjacent to Grand Teton National Park.

Either way, murder is not technically legal in the “Zone of Death.” Though it is unprecedented, if a murder occurred in the Zone of Death it would be prosecuted. Jurisdiction would have to be established, which would also establish precedent for cases originating from the area.

National Park investigators alongside local police and the FBI are searching the park for any sign of the 22-year-old woman, CNN reported.

The couple was in the park in late August, around the time that Ms Pepito last spoke with her mother, on 25 August.

Multi-jurisdictional investigations are ongoing in Colorado, Florida, Utah and Wyoming.

Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie: typical fights or couple goals?

Friday 17 September 2021 14:19 , Celine Wadhera

Yesterday, one of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were described as “couple goals” by Ms Petito’s friend, Nicole Kalanich, but today, Mr Laundrie’s sister described the couple’s fight, captured on police body camera footage as “typical”.

So, what was the nature of Ms Petito and Mr Laundrie’s relationship?

Speaking with NBC2, Ms Kalanich said that the couple seemed to be happy and excited about their trip. She added that they “always smiled”and said that the two were “couple goals”.

But this morning, Cassie Laundrie told Good Morning America that the fight between Ms Pepito and Mr Laundrie in Moab, Utah, where Ms Pepito is crying, was “typical” for the couple.

“It looked typical of both of them,” she said. “Whenever they would fight, they would take a little break and come back and be fine.”

In the video, the couple admit that the stress of travelling together in the van had led them to argue more often. According to the police report, the couple were arguing and hitting each other when they arrived.

The officers who responded to the incident determined that it was a “mental health break” rather than a domestic assault situation, and advised the couple to separate for the evening.

Gabby’s father: ‘My gut tells me that something bad happened’

Friday 17 September 2021 13:34 , Celine Wadhera

Gabby’s father, Joe Pepito told HLN that he feared that “something bad” had happened to his daughter.

He said: “My gut tells me that something bad happened, and I am never going to be able to hold my baby girl again”.

“What my head tells me, is that if I focus on that, if I focus on that, I’m not going to be able to do the job that needs to be done, that her boyfriend, or fiancé should be doing. He should be leading this charge.”

He also responded to the clip of Cassie Laundrie, Brian Laundrie’s sister, speaking on Good Morning America, where Ms Laundrie said that Gabby was like a sister to her, and that she wanted Gabby to be found safe.

Mr Pepito said: “If you love Gabby as a sister, and you knew your brother was home on the 10th, and no Gabby to be found, who lives in that house, and told no one, it explains a lot as to why we’re in the situation that we’re in now.

“Whenever they fight they would take a little break and come back and be fine. Because that’s what you do in a couple.”

She said that her brother was a “wonderful” person who had always been there when needed, and added that she hoped Ms Pepito would return “safe and sound”.

“He’s a wonderful uncle, he’s always been there when I need him, he’s been there every time that Gabby needed him.

Everything we know about the mysterious disappearance of Gabby Petito

Who’s jurisdiction?

Friday 17 September 2021 11:30 , Celine Wadhera

In the investigation to find YouTuber Gabby Pepito, who was on a months-long road trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, which began in New York, crossed Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming, and “ended” in Florida, who ultimately has jurisdiction?

According to Todd Garrison, North Port, Florida’s police chief, it’s a “multi-jurisdictional case”.

He told CNN that police in North Port – where Ms Pepito lived with her fiancé Brian Laundrie and his family – were actively working the case, alongside FBI and local authorities in Utah and Wyoming.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office in Utah has reported that they are actively investigating any connection between Ms Pepito’s disappearance and a double homicide that occurred in Grand County – near where Ms Pepito and Mr Laundrie’s police-recorded altercation took place.

The FBI are also working alongside law enforcement partners in Wyoming’s Teton National Park, from where Ms Pepito last spoke with her mother on 25 August, as well as the Jackson Police Department, and other state and local law enforcement agencies across the country.

Anyone with any information regarding Ms Pepito’s whereabouts should call the FBI’s national tipline on 1-800-629-7171 (1-800-CALL-FBI) or use the Bureau’s online electronic tip form.

North Port police chief believes Brian Laundrie is withholding critical information

Friday 17 September 2021 10:46 , Celine Wadhera

The North Port police chief believes that Brian Laundrie is withholding critical information about Gabby Pepito’s disappearance.

Speaking to Don Lemon on CNN on Thursday evening, chief Todd Garrison confirmed that Mr Laundrie was a person of interest in the case, and pleaded with him and her family to come forward with any information regarding her whereabouts.

“We are conducting a missing person investigation. Two people went on a trip, and one person returned. And that Person is Brian. And we’re looking for Gabby, and he is not willing to provide us any information.”

“I believe Brian has the information. I believe people around Brian may also have the information, and we are pleading to those people to come forward.

“Provide us the information that we need to find Gabby and reunite Gabby with her family because she deserves it and her family deserves it.”

He added that Mr Laundrie was the only person who had been identified as a person of interest in the case.

Gabby’s cousin: ‘I’ve never seen her stressed out like that’

Friday 17 September 2021 10:01 , Celine Wadhera

Speaking on NewsNation Now, Zoey Wickman, responded to the police bodycamera footage of her visibly upset cousin.

When asked by anchor Ashleigh Banfield if the Gabby in the video was familiar to her, Ms Wickman said: “No … I’ve always known Gabby to just be so kind and caring”.

She added: “She was just a free-spirited mind. She was always happy. She literally lived in the middle of the desert and slept in a tent.

“I’ve never seen her cry, I’ve never seen her stressed out like that.”

Gabby Petito’s father responds to Cassie Laundrie Clip

Friday 17 September 2021 09:16 , Celine Wadhera

Speaking on NewsNation Now, Joe Petito, Gabby’s father, responded to the clip of Cassie Laundrie’s Good Morning America interview, where she said that she wanted Gabby to come home safely.

Ms Laundrie’s interview appears to be the only statement made by the Laundrie family after the Petito family wrote a letter to Brian Laundrie’s parents, begging them to help find her.

In that context, Mr Petito said that Ms Laundrie’s comments “made a lot of sense”.

“It actually made a lot of sense,” he said. “It brings things to light. Because, we’ve been looking for Gabby for how long? And they’ve known that Brian’s been there (North Port, Florida) since the 1st.

“That was a very nice, well-written statement. But it does explain, that if that’s that family’s version of love to just ignore and not care that someone’s gone, and people are looking for them, and the entire country’s looking for them, I meant that explains to how we got to where we are today. ‘Cause I mean, look at their version of what they call love.”
