Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, speaks during a hearing on April 16, 2024 in Washington, D.C. A growing number of Republicans are criticizing Greene over her efforts to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson and other legislative issues.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has faced heightened criticism from her fellow House Republicans in recent days.

Greene, a Georgia Republican and staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, ruffled feathers among House Republicans this week. She announced she plans to call a vote on her previously unprivileged motion to vacate against House Speaker Mike Johnson, sparking criticism from several Republicans who warned the move may be damaging to the party.

Greene introduced the motion to vacate against Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, in March after he passed a $1.2 trillion spending package with Democratic support to fund the government. Her announcement on Wednesday came after weeks of growing frustration among House conservatives, who have expressed disappointment with Johnson over the spending package and for holding a vote on legislation to send aid to Ukraine.

She also broke from the majority of her party by opposing the Antisemitism Awareness Act, a bill that would require the Department of Education to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism when enforcing anti-discrimination laws. She voted against the bill over concerns it could make parts of the Bible illegal, she wrote to X.

Representative Mike Lawler, a New York Republican representing a Democratic-leaning congressional district won by President Joe Biden in 2020, criticized Greene in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday over her stance on the act, which he sponsored.

Greene posted a critique of Lawler’s legislation, which she described as a “free speech killing bill,” and his support for expelling former New York Representative George Santos in December 2023.

“And yet in both instances, more than two thirds of Congress voted with me. The bill simply codifies President Trump’s executive order into law — it does not ban the Bible or limit free speech. #MoscowMarjorie has gone off the deep end — maybe the result of a space laser,” Lawler responded, referring to a conspiracy theory that Greene once promoted in a now-deleted Facebook post

Newsweek reached out to Greene’s office for comment via email.

Here is a list of other House Republicans who have criticized Representative Greene in recent days:

Representative Don Bacon

Representative Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican who also represents a Biden-won district, told reporters this week that most Republicans find her effort to remove Johnson “disgusting.”

“Ninety-eight percent of us find it disgusting,” he said. “I just try to ignore it. I can’t help what she does. I think we’ll overwhelmingly oppose it, and I think even on the Democrat side, we’ll have a lot of support. We’re tired of the chaos. We’re tired of the anarchy.”

Speaker Mike Johnson

While Johnson has largely praised Greene in the past, he has become more critical of the Georgia conservative in recent days. In a statement reported by Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman, Johnson said Greene’s motion is “wrong for the Republican Conference, wrong for the institution, and wrong for the country.”

In an interview with NewsNation on Wednesday, Johnson also said Greene is not “proving to be” a serious lawmaker.

Representative Marc Molinaro

Representative Marc Molinaro, a New York Republican, criticized Greene in April for her political “theater” in remarks to CNN.

“Her theater and this constant effort to hold the Congress hostage has to come to an end. I’m going to have no part in it. And a good number of my colleagues, conservative and moderate, believe that enough is enough. It is time to move on and to move past this kind of nonsense,” he said.

Representative Andy Ogles

Representative Andy Ogles, a Tennessee Republican, told CNN this week that he believes the motion to vacate is a “distraction” and “mistake.”

Senator Thom Tillis

Senator Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, criticized Greene on CNN last week, describing her as “uninformed” and a “total waste of time.”

“She is a horrible leader. She is dragging our brand down. She, not the Democrats, are the biggest risk to us getting back to a majority,” he said.

Greene previously said that she doesn’t “give a rat’s ass” what her colleagues think about her hopes to remove Johnson.

“I voted for Mike Johnson because his voting record before he became speaker was conservative. But once he became speaker, he has become a man that none of us recognize,” Greene said.
