Front three threat, Emerson Royal decision made - Tottenham lineups Conte should pick vs Chelsea

front three threat, emerson royal decision made - tottenham lineups conte should pick vs chelsea

Antonio Conte has some Tottenham selection decisions to make, against Chelsea.

Sunday sees Tottenham face their first London derby of the season, with a trip to Stamford Bridge. Spurs’ record away against Chelsea is one they will want to change and Antonio Conte will hope his side can get the victory they failed to get last season.

Both teams got maximum points from their first match of the 2022/23 campaign. Conte now needs his side to take the positives from their 4-1 win against Southampton and produce a solid performance against Thomas Tuchel’s side.

So how exactly should Tottenham line up on Sunday afternoon? Our Tottenham Hotspur reporters have all named the side they would pick to face Southampton.

Alasdair Gold – Tottenham Hotspur correspondent

Conte will be loathed to tinker with a winning team as Spurs look to make up for four dismal defeats to Chelsea last season with an improved performance at Stamford Bridge this time around.

Tottenham will be without Clement Lenglet and Oliver Skipp through injury but will otherwise have a full-strength, much-improved squad to choose from.

The only change Conte might be tempted to make is bringing in the experienced big game player Ivan Perisic for the derby, but the impressive goalscoring performance of Ryan Sessegnon in the victory against Southampton means he will be expecting to get the nod again. He is also fitter and sharper than Perisic at the moment and Conte might be reluctant to throw the Croatian into such a big, high-tempo game in the heat for his full debut.

Elsewhere the team picks itself and the bench is stronger with the addition of Richarlison, as he returns from his suspension.

Gold’s team: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Emerson, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son.

Rob Guest – Tottenham Hotspur reporter

Conte’s Tottenham XI to take on Chelsea pretty much picks itself after last weekend’s brilliant 4-1 win over Southampton. While in previous games the boss may have been umming and ahhing over his selection, there’s perhaps only one position up for debate.

That is the left-wing-back role, with Sessegnon and Perisic fighting it out to start at Stamford Bridge. It would be incredibly harsh on the former to drop out of the XI after a starring role last weekend but Conte could opt for the latter’s experience in big games.

However, it is worth noting that Sessegnon himself played very well in the away games at Man City and Liverpool earlier in the year. On the opposite flank, Emerson Royal starts on merit and his defensive qualities will help Tottenham out in this battle.

Spurs have Richarlison to select from this weekend following his return from suspension but he will have to make do with a place on the substitutes’ bench to begin with.

Guest’s team: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Emerson, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son

Emma de Duve – Tottenham Hotspur reporter

Conte will have been happy with the overall performance against Southampton and of course, the three points. However now is the challenge of going to Stamford Bridge and sending a message to other Premier League teams, on the threat Tottenham pose this season.

There are a few changes the Italian could make to his starting line-up, especially with the depth he now has. However, the 11 that started against the Saints could be the best group to also start against Chelsea.

The starting XI in the first match didn’t involve any of the new arrivals, but instead was the squad players involved in helping Spurs secure a top four spot last season. Therefore there is the question of, why fix something that isn’t broken?

The front three were solid defensively last week and the middle four made an impact at both ends of the field. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min weren’t at their best but still made some impact and Conte will hope their performance will improve, in the big clash.

de Duve’s team: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Emerson, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son
