From Harry Brook to Andre Russell, the biggest flops of IPL 2023

IPL 2023 has been a rollercoaster ride for all the franchises this year as the teams travelled across the country in front of roaring crowds. While some players had a fantastic season, some had a forgetful one.

However, what was surprising this year was the fact that some big players who had good stats backing them had one of their worst outings this year. These are the players who were expected to turn around the games in their teams’ favour. Instead, they failed in back-to-back matches.

Here are some of the biggest flop shows in IPL 2023:

1. Harry Brook (SRH): The England star who was roped in at a mammoth price of Rs 13.25 crore at the auctions by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was one of the biggest flop shows of the season. In 11 matches he played, Brook made only 190 runs at a strike-rate of 123.38.

The only feather in his cap this year was his only century against KKR when he made 100 off 55 balls. In the other 10 games, Brook failed to even cross 30. The  England batter was dismissed for a duck thrice in the tournament. We would not be surprised if the franchise decided to part ways with the England batter.

2. Prithvi Shaw (DD): Among the big names who had a torrid season this year, Prithvi Shaw should be on the top of the list. The right-handed batter turned out to be a big liability for DD this year as he consistently failed to make an impact with the bat. In 8 matches he played, Shaw only made 106 runs at an average of 13.25 and a strike-rate of 124.71.

Leave aside winning games for DD, Shaw looked like an amateur batter who was struggling in front of top class bowlers. After a string of bad performances, Shaw was dropped from the side. And there are high chances that he might also be dropped from the franchise next year.

3. Andre Russell (KKR): The big star of Kolkata Knight Riders, powerful hitter Andre Russell turned out to be a big disappointment this season. Russell could only manage to score 227 runs in 15 matches at an average of 20.64 a batting strike rate of 145.51. On paper, KKR’s batting wasn’t top class from the starting of the tournament, and Russell was one among the only three batters apart from Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer on whom the hopes of the team were pinned upon. But Russell had the worst IPL of his career, and it even prompted discussions whether the KKR management should rethink over its decision to retain the Caribbean batter.

Russell’s batting position was also discussed a lot this season as he often came in to bat at number five or six and he hardly got more than 10-15 balls to play. Russell’s poor form is a big reason why KKR lost four games in a row in the middle of the tournament.

4. Umran Malik (SRH): The star performer for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) last year, who received huge praise for his pace, was out of form this whole season. Though the Jammu pacer had his pace intact, he failed to swing the ball along, didn’t show much variation in his deliveries, and thus couldn’t produce wickets for his team.

Umran was removed from the squad after 8 matches as he could get only 5 wickets and was too costly at an economy of 10.85.

5. Dinesh Karthik (RCB): Karthik, who was on song last season, was completely out of tune this year and could not win a single match for RCB as a finisher. Karthik made just 140 runs in 13 matches at a strike-rate of 134.62. Throughout the season, Karthik struggled with his form.

RCB’s coach Sanjay Bangar also conceded in a press conference that Karthik just could not click this season. So, this was most probably the last IPL for Karthik for RCB. However, there is no official confirmation from yet.
