With D’Andre Swift set to hit free agency unless the Eagles use the franchise tag on their Pro Bowl running back, the team has some difficult decisions to make at that position ahead of the start of the new league year next month.
Perhaps with that in mind, the Eagles added a running back Tuesday morning, signing former San Francisco 49ers draft pick Tyrion Davis-Price to a reserve-future contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Davis-Price was a third-round pick by the 49ers in 2022, but contributed very little the last two seasons to a backfield that included superstar Christian McCaffrey and his backup Elijah Mitchell.
In six games as a rookie, Davis-Price carried the ball 34 times for 99 yards. He played in just one game in the recently completed season and carried the ball six times for 21 yards for the NFC champions. All six carries came in the fourth quarter of San Francisco’s lopsided Week 5 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The running back played 23 snaps on special teams as a rookie, but did not contribute at all in that role during his second season.
In three seasons at LSU, Davis-Price rushed for 1,744 yards on 379 carries and scored 15 touchdowns. He also caught 28 passes for 185 yards. As a junior at LSU, he rushed for 1,003 yards and scored six touchdowns while catching 10 passes for 64 yards.
The 6-foot-1, 219-pound back ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.
Tuesday marked the first day that teams can use the franchise tag on a player. Swift is someone they might consider for that designation. Historically, the Eagles have shied away from using the tag. The last player they tagged was wide receiver DeSean Jackson in 2012. Teams have until March 7 to use the tag designation.
In addition to Swift, running backs Boston Scott and Rashaad Penny are also eligible to become free agents when the new league year opens March 13. The Eagles are unlikely to bring back Scott or Penny. Kenneth Gainwell, Lew Nichols and Davis-Price are the only running backs on the roster that are not eligible for free agency.
