air india cabin crew flags fabric issue in new uniforms; airline to begin sizing, production soon

Air India is set to address feedback received on its new cabin crew uniforms, which includes concerns about fabric quality, PTI quoted sources as saying. Designed by Manish Malhotra and unveiled by the Tata Group-owned airline in December, the uniforms initially debuted for crew members on the carrier’s A350 aircraft.

However, some issues with the fabric, such as fast-fading colors, have surfaced. Notably, the uniforms were launched with much fanfare for crew members of the carrier’s A350 aircraft.

Production of new cabin crew uniforms to start soon

According to sources, the airline will soon commence production for all cabin crew uniforms, taking into account the feedback received. An Air India spokesperson confirmed that the production program for over 8,000 cabin crew members will commence within a week.

“Air India can confirm that the uniform sizing and production programme for our over 8,000-strong cabin crew members will begin in about a week’s time,” the spokesperson said in a statement to PTI.

“The new uniform will subsequently be distributed to the crew, aligned with the transition of Air India’s flagship A350 to long haul international service in the coming months,” he added.

Current uniform a blend of tradition and modernity

Earlier, in December, the airline in a statement had stated that the new uniform designs for Air India crew were developed in consultation with cabin crew representatives and the airline’s in-flight services team.

The female cabin crew attire features a ready-to-wear ombre saree with intricate patterns inspired by Indian heritage architecture (jharokha) and the Vista (new Air India logo icon), paired with a comfortable blouse and blazer.

Meanwhile, the cockpit crew’s uniform features a classic black double-breasted suit with a print inspired by the airline’s Vista logo, symbolising professionalism, timelessness and the gravitas of the flying profession.
