AAIB Releases Statement On Last Year’s Delta Boeing 767 Engine Failure In Edinburgh
- Delta Air Lines’ Boeing 767 experienced a contained engine failure and fuel leak shortly after take-off from Edinburgh Airport last year.
- The investigation is ongoing to understand how engine vibration contributed to the fuel leak.
- Delta’s Boeing 767 fleet has an average age of 26.4 years and continues to operate on long to medium-haul routes.
The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) recently issued a statement regarding its ongoing investigation into the engine incident involving a Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 in Edinburgh last year.
The incident overview
On February 10, 2023, during flight DL 209 from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), a Delta Air Lines Boeing 767-300ER, registered as N197DN, experienced a sudden fire in its right engine along with a leaking streak later identified as a fuel leak.
The incident unfolded a mere ten minutes after the Boeing 767 departed from EDI airport. In response to the fire in the right engine, the aircraft promptly conducted an emergency landing and diverted to Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK).
After a departure marked by loud noises both from the aircraft and passengers, the descent into Glasgow presented a stark contrast. Passengers observed an almost complete absence of noise, creating an eerie silence in the cabin. This was likely due to the right engine being shut off by the flight crew.

The incidental flight lasted for less than half an hour.
The aircraft landed safely on the runway approximately 30 minutes after departure. It taxied to the apron, where passengers disembarked without incident. According to a report by The Aviation Herald, the aircraft in question remained at PIK airport until February 22, 2023, then flew to Atlanta where it remained grounded until March 3, 2023. “Contained engine failure”
As per the AAIB statement, Delta’s Boeing 767 suffered a contained engine failure shortly after take-off from Edinburgh Airport, leading to airframe vibration and engine alerts, prompting the aircraft to divert to Prestwick Airport.
After reaching the stand, fuel leakage from the right wing was noticed, resulting in the rapid disembarkation of passengers. The investigation has been primarily focused on understanding how engine vibration contributed to the fuel leak. The AAIB added that the investigation is ongoing, and the final report is expected to be published in early 2024.
Delta’s Boeing 767, which experienced a contained engine failure in Edinburgh, is presently 26.6 years old, as per Planespotters.net. The aircraft remains operational and is primarily utilized on domestic routes, such as Honolulu to Minneapolis or Salt Lake City to Honolulu, according to Flightradar24.com. As it stands, Delta Air Lines operates a fleet of 65 Boeing 767 aircraft. Their average age is 26.4 years, as per Planespotters.net data.
