BIR calls on taxpayers to file, pay 2023 annual income tax

bir calls on taxpayers to file, pay 2023 annual income tax

Taxpayers troop to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) office in Intramuros, Manila on Monday, April 15, 2024, to file their annual income tax returns (ITRs). The BIR says there will be no extension of today’s deadline for filing of ITRs. DANNY PATA

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Monday reminded taxpayers that today is the deadline to file their 2023 Annual Income Tax Return (AITR) and pay taxes.

“Gusto nating paalalahanan lahat po ng ating kababayan na ngayon po ang huling araw ng pagpa-file at pagbabayad ng annual income tax for the year 2023,” BIR Commissioner Romeo ‘Jun’ Lumagui Jr. said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

(We want to remind everyone that today is the last day to file and pay the AITR for 2023.)

Under Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 51-2024, the BIR said the filing of the AITR shall be done electronically through BIR electronic platforms such as Electronic Filing and Payment System (eFPS) or Electronic BIR Forms (eBIRForms).

In case the platforms are unavailable, the BIR may allow manual filing of the AITR.

Lumagui said the BIR is open until 5 p.m., assuring the public that individuals who are already in line before 5 p.m. will be accommodated.

Meanwhile, payment of income tax due should be made either electronically through any available electronic payment (ePay) gateways or manually at any authorized agent bank (AAB) or revenue collection officer (RCO) of any revenue district office (RDO).

The BIR said that individual taxpayers should use the existing version of BIR Form No. 1701 or 1701A in the filing of the 2023 AITR.

It said the two-page tax return under the Ease of Paying Taxes Act should be used in the filing of the 2024 AITR.

According to Lumagui, individuals who will miss the April 15 deadline will be penalized.

“Meron pong penalty kaya nga po lagi po tayong— patuloy ang pagpapaalala na gawin po ito on or before April 15 dahil pagkatapos po meron na pong ipapataw na surcharge na 25% at interes na 12%,” he said, adding that this is per annum.

(There’s a penalty and that’s why we continuously remind the public to do this on or before April 15 because after the deadline, we will be imposeing a surcharge of 25% and an interest of 12%.)

For the entire year, the agency’s revenue target was set at P3.055 trillion. The BIR previously announced that it collected P446.423 billion from January to February.—AOL. GMA Integrated News
