One of the Best GBA Games Is Making a Comeback on Modern Platforms

  • Limited Run Games is remastering Ninja Five-O for modern platforms, pleasing old-school Game Boy Advance fans.
  • The classic side-scrolling action platformer was a sleeper hit in 2003 due to its tight gameplay and level design.
  • In addition to Ninja Five-O, Konami classics Felix the Cat and Rocket Knight Adventures will also be remastered.

The classic Game Boy Advance platformer Ninja Five-O will get a remaster for modern platforms this year. The Konami game will be remastered by Limited Run Games, which specializes in bringing retro titles to modern systems, and it’s likely to appease old-school Game Boy Advance fans.

Ninja Five-O was originally released in 2003 for the GBA, and it’s often considered among the best Game Boy Advance games by its fans. Inspired by classics like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi, Ninja Five-O was a side-scroller action platformer in which the players control Joe Osugi, a ninja who fought a group of terrorists who used powerful magic masks. At the time, the title was widely praised due to its tight gameplay and good level design, which made it one of the biggest sleeper hits of the platform. Unfortunately, all this attention made Ninja Five-O rather expensive to purchase online, so fans have been waiting for a remaster for years.

Lost GBA Game Making a Comeback on the Nintendo Switch

Today’s Indie World Showcase announces a previously unreleased Game Boy Advance game that will be making its way to Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Now, Limited Run Games has announced that it’s taking Ninja Five-O to Steam, Switch, PS4, and PS5 later this year. The remaster will be powered by Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine, which is a development tool that allows legacy content to be ported to modern platforms. Like similar projects made by the company before, Ninja Five-O will gain a faithful remake, which will try to emulate the original experience while overhauling its resolution and gameplay to run smoothly on current platforms. At the moment, the game does not have an official release date or price, and it’s unclear if it will gain a special edition.

Ninja Five-O Remaster Trailer

Ninja Five-O is not the only Konami classic to be making a comeback. Last month, Konami and Limited Run Games announced a partnership to bring two classic games to modern platforms: Felix the Cat and Rocket Knight Adventures, which will also be ported using the Carbon Engine.

Limited Run Games has been standing out when it comes to quality ports in recent years. Last year, the company remastered several Jurassic Park games from the 90s, including the original game and Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues.

Another prominent project announced by Limited Run Games recently includes the Gex Trilogy remaster. The lizard Gex was a pretty popular character in the 90s, and fans were glad to see the series coming back after so many years. While the project was announced last year, the port has not been released yet, which may also mean that it may be a while before fans will get to play Ninja Five-O.
