Pitso Mosimane just got R18m richer!

Celebrated South African football manager Pitso Mosimane has achieved a significant legal win against his former club, Al Ahli. FIFA, football’s governing body, conducted a thorough investigation and ruled in Mosimane’s favour, ordering the Saudi Arabian club to pay him millions in a contract breach settlement.

Mosimane’s Triumphant Season

Mosimane’s time with Al Ahli began during the challenging 2022/23 season. The club, having recently suffered an unexpected relegation, sought his expertise to guide them back to the Saudi Pro League. The South African tactician delivered, exceeding expectations by not only securing promotion but also clinching the Saudi First Division title.

However, Al Ahli’s failure to uphold their financial obligations towards Mosimane led to a breakdown in the relationship and the manager’s subsequent decision to escalate the matter to FIFA.

What Was Owed?

Mosimane’s success on the pitch came with substantial financial rewards outlined in his contract. He was guaranteed a monthly salary of R2.7 million for the 2022/23 season, plus a promotion bonus of R2.8 million and a separate R1.4 million bonus for winning the league.

Upon returning the club to the topflight, his salary would increase to R2.3 million per month. The contract also included four return business class flight tickets between Jeddah and Johannesburg.

FIFA’s Landmark Ruling

FIFA ruled that Al Ahli must pay Mosimane R159,000 in late payment interest, along with the outstanding R2.8 million promotion bonus and R1.4 million championship bonus.

Additionally, they must pay Mosimane R7,095,078, which were outstanding under the contract at the time of his departure. FIFA also imposed a 5% annual interest rate on a portion of the debt, roughly R6,870,641.

Mosimane Forges Ahead

Pitso Mosimane is currently focused on his new role as manager of Abha Club, another Saudi Pro League team. Facing the challenge of relegation, Mosimane’s immediate priority is to secure his current club’s place within the top division.

Successfully avoiding relegation will significantly impact his future in Saudi Arabian football, potentially leading to a long-term managerial position within the league.
