Audrey Ledoux did what that and more in our Athletics N recap. First things first, let’s head to Xiaomi China and the premiere of the Diamond League season where Edmonton’s Marco A Rope ran a world leading time in the 800 meter to win the event in one minute, 43.61 seconds, his fastest season opener yet. That’s him in the yellow, but let’s call it gold, shall we? Came here last year and I ran a personal best and I knew if I just stuck to the pace I was going to run fast again. Also competing in China. Sarah Mitten of Brooklyn, Nova Scotia, took 4th and shot cut with her best throw of 19.35 meters, and Vancouver’s Reagan Yee placed eight out of fourteen in the 3000m steeple chase. Not to bury the lead, but two Canadian records fell over the weekend. The first was in Nairobi, Kenya at the Kip Cano Classic, where world champion Ethan Kasberg of Nanaimo, BC through a monster 84.38 meters, the farthest hammer throw since 2008. That’s over 3 meters further than his previous personal best world title throw from Budapest last summer. And finally, Audrey Leduc of Gatineau, QC set a Canadian record of 10.96 seconds in the 100m at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet in Baton Rouge. Her second place come from behind finish broke the long standing record of 10.98 seconds set in 1987 by the late Angela Bailey. Not only is this the fastest Canadian women’s time in 36 years, but in doing so Leduc achieve the Paris Olympic standard. We’ll see if she’ll be Paris bound when the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials take place in Montreal at the end of June. See you next week.
