The premise is eye-catching enough. It’s 1996 and a private plane carrying an all-girls high school soccer team has just crashed into the American wilderness. The result is a creepy, blood-drenched race for survival; a modern, female take on The Lord of the Flies, with a heady mix of nineties nostalgia and sneaking supernatural undertones. Yellowjackets plays out like a horror film in slow motion. The plot jumps between the present day (with an impressive ‘grown up’ cast including Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci) and the events of the crash, with enough drip-fed, gory snapshots to convince you that nothing is going to end well. Yet the show is much more than jumps and bloodshed. The drama is rooted in the nuances of female dynamics and what happens when you place friendships, rivalries and teenage insecurities in a life-or-death scenario. The pitch-perfect note of eerie foreboding throughout is based, not so much in what may be out there in the woods for these girls, but in what they may do to one another.

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel
Global Tech News DailyIf you haven’t watched a moment of The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, one could rightly ask where you’ve been hiding for the last five years. With the fourth season dropping on 18 February, now is the perfect time to get acquainted with this charming treat of a show. The critically lauded comedy drama stars Rachel Brosnahan as ‘Midge’ Maisel; an upper West Side housewife in late 1950s New York who accidentally stumbles into a career as a stand-up comic. Full of quippy one liners and witty, fresh dialogue in brilliantly realised period set-pieces, this an endlessly entertaining watch from the writing team behind Gilmore Girls. Perhaps more plot-focused and a little darker than its predecessor, it nevertheless shares the same fast-paced dialogue and biting wit that made the former a cult favourite. Brimming with finely drawn characters, moving moments and riotous laughs, this is your 2022 comfort watch.
Seasons 1-3 are available to watch now on Amazon Prime Video. Season 4 arrives 18 February.
Euphoria
Global Tech News DailyIt became an instant Gen Z cult watch when it debuted in 2019, spawning a thousand glitter eyeshadows and almost single-handedly reviving late nineties/early noughties style. The critically acclaimed show is, however, an avant garde, thoughtful piece of work hiding behind the veneer of a teen drama. It’s delayed second season, which began airing last month, has cranked up Euphoria hype to new levels, dragging many first-time watchers into the fold. The show is ostensibly about the recovery, relapses and struggles of 17-year-old drug addict Rue, played to award-winning affect by a never-better Zendaya. Yet the plot considers the narratives of so many of the main cast – largely her classmates – with great detail and imagination; getting inside the heads of characters who seem outwardly irredeemable or two-dimensional and exploding your perception at every turn. The cinematography, score and script are mesmerising and Euphoria’s staggeringly good second season (and recent renewal for a third) reminds us why it is one of the most unique and surprising TV offerings today.

Pam & Tommy
© Erin Simkin Lily James as Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy
It has arrived amid a deluge of hype, commentary and its fair share of criticism, but Pam & Tommy is about a lot more than Lily James’s uncanny transformation into Pamela Anderson. This eight-part series tells the unbelievable true story behind the theft and release of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s (private) sex tape. On the surface, it is a nineties nostalgia-fest and a fast-paced romp that seems to be having as much fun as Pam and Tommy in their drug-fuelled Mexico wedding weekend. Yet it tangles with shifting sexual mores, gender politics and the pressures of fame and reputation in a high-profile relationship like a Hollywood biopic, slowing down and reflecting when it needs to, revelling as much in its quieter beats as its more outlandish. It doesn’t get everything right, and one may rightfully question whether it needed eight hour-long episodes, but it is still a ludicrously entertaining watch, with knockout central performances from Lily James and Sebastian Stan.
Episodes 1-3 are available now on Disney+. The remaining episodes will air weekly. SIGN UP
The Gilded Age

If you need an escapist watch, this eagerly awaited series from Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, is perfect. It takes everything you loved about the original Fellowes behemoth and sets it in the titular boom years of the 1880s in New York City. This period drama charts the machinations of upper-class society – their rivalries, squabbles and rituals – and is a dreamy dive into the world of Edith Wharton and Henry James, a look at how society shifts and stagnates. Naturally, it is also a glorious visual treat of impossible wealth, decadence and costumery, with a stellar cast, including Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon.
