West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar injured amid Sandeshkhali protest, hospitalised
NEW DELHI: West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Sukanta Majumdar sustained injuries and was hospitalised after falling from his car amid Sandeshkhali protest.
Majumdar lost balance and fell on the car’s bonnet on which he was standing while addressing reporters in North 24 Parganas district. He was later admitted to Basirhat multi-facility hospital.
The unrest stemmed from ongoing agitation by women in Sandeshkhali, who accuse TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates of perpetrating atrocities against them. Earlier, locals, particularly women, marched through various sections of Sandeshkhali, carrying slippers in their hands, demanding the arrest of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh in an alleged land ration allotment scam and the alleged rape incidents.

The incident happened at Taki on the banks of River Ichamati along the India-Bangladesh border. Sandeshkhali is around 35 km from Taki. The car had a police sticker pasted on its windscreen, the official said.
Reacting to the news of injured Majumdar, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “The TMC does not mean Trinamool Congress but Taliban Mansikta Culture. On one hand, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee talks about ‘Ma Mati Manush’, on the other, the state has become ‘bandh, balatkari and bomb’. Shahjahan Sheikh is roaming freely.”

Meanwhile, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that CM Mamata Banerjee is acting as a silent spectator. Addressing a press conference, Bhatia said, “West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is acting as a silent spectator. This is a matter of concern. This press conference highlights the lawlessness that prevails in West Bengal where it is clear to every citizen the rule of law does not prevail or exist, rather the law of the anarchy ruler Mamata Banerjee prevails.”
“When the perpetrator of the crime happens to be a TMC goon, the chief minister of the state doesn’t even care to uphold the dignity of the women of the state, especially Hindu women, being targeted by the goons of Sheikh Shahjahan, the absconder,” he added.
Reacting to his statement, TMC listed a number of rape and criminal cases in BJP-run states and that ‘jungle raaj reflects in the states run by double-engine.’
Tensions escalated when BJP activists, led by Majumdar, clashed with law enforcement on Tuesday in Basirhat as their protest was thwarted. In a chaotic scene, party members breached barricades and entered the village, prompting police to resort to force to disperse them. Following the altercation, Majumdar and several demonstrators were briefly detained before being released.
The West Bengal government have reimposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in and around 500 metres of area in seven-gram panchayats, including Sandeshkhali.
