Final Fantasy 16 Players Have New Hope for Playable Cid and Jill
- Producer Naoki Yoshida suggests that Jill and Cid could become playable characters in Final Fantasy 16, potentially as a “bonus” for fans if the PC version is successful.
- The addition of more playable characters could entice players to replay the game in New Game Plus mode and could lead to increased sales.
- Some fans have expressed disappointment in Square Enix using the PC version’s success as a potential determining factor for additional updates, and would prefer the company to acknowledge the demand for more playable characters.
Final Fantasy 16 players are hopeful about Jill and Cid being playable in a future update following a recent interview with game producer Naoki Yoshida. Although the Final Fantasy 16 development team has disbanded, Yoshida suggests that the success of the upcoming PC version could result in a “bonus” for fans alongside the upcoming DLC.
Despite the franchise’s shift away from turn-based combat, Final Fantasy 16 was met with positive reception by critics and longtime fans. The game was a sales success in Japan, breaking an all-time record for PlayStation 5 within just two weeks at retail. Excitement for Final Fantasy 16 continued well after the game’s release in June thanks to the promise of post-launch updates and DLC. The game’s first major expansion, Final Fantasy 16: Echoes of the Fallen, was revealed at The Game Awards 2023 on December 7 and released shortly afterward. Although the DLC’s release was a welcomed surprise, some still criticize Final Fantasy 16’s action system and lack of playable characters.

Final Fantasy 16’s Development Team Has Been Disbanded
Creative Business Unit 3, the developer behind Final Fantasy 16, has been disbanded according to producer and industry veteran Naoki Yoshida.
According to a recent Famitsu interview with producer Naoki Yoshida (translated by Twitter user Aitaikimochi), Yoshida suggests that Jill and Cid may become playable in Final Fantasy 16. Specifically, Yoshida notes that the profitable release of Final Fantasy 16 for PC could allow Square Enix to make Jill and Cid playable as a “bonus” for fans. Aitaikimochi’s translation of the interview excerpt has made fans hopeful for more playable characters in Final Fantasy 16 since Clive is the main playable character for the majority of the main story. The Twitter user also clarified that Joshua could become playable alongside Jill and Cid, as Yoshida implies that more than two playable characters are possible. Moreover, some users believe Dion would be another potential candidate for this new update.
Although this translation was met with a lot of hype from the Final Fantasy 16 community, some fans aren’t happy with Square Enix using the PC version’s release as a determining factor for additional game updates. Twitter users in the replies would like Square Enix to recognize the high demand for more playable characters in Final Fantasy 16 since this was a point of critique from the community following the game’s launch on PS5.
Nonetheless, the addition of more playable characters is beneficial for Final Fantasy 16. Playable Jill and Cid could encourage some players to replay Final Fantasy 16 in New Game Plus mode, for example. In addition, increased sales could incentivize Square Enix to add more highly-requested features to Final Fantasy 16.
