Voters in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire are heading to the polls today to have their say on who will replace former Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the federal seat of Cook. Let’s go to 9’s federal politics reporter Amanda Copp in Canberra for more. Amanda, this is a very safe Liberal seat. So what’s likely to happen today? Yeah, you’re right, Sophie. It’s one of the safest seats in the country and has a margin of 12.4%. Plus, the Liberals have held the seat of Cook for close to half a century, so it’s safe to say that Liberals aren’t too worried about it. But political parties should never take voters for granted because there is some unease today with locals. A bit put out by the new Liberal candidate is a man named Simon Kennedy. He’s a former McKinsey consultant, but didn’t actually live in the local area immediately before this by election. So some pollsters are saying it could open up the seat to a challenge from a so-called Teal Independent, the likes of which devastated previously super safe Liberal seats in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth at the last election. But with no teals running in today’s vote, that kind of result is unlikely until the federal election next year. And the other thing to note is the Labour Party isn’t even running a candidate here, so there’s not an obvious place for any unhappy voters to go. Sophie. Amanda, thank you.
