Fewer payment problems in corona time

According to CEO Peter van den Bosch of the Credit Registration Bureau (BKR), the corona pandemic has led to fewer payment problems. “People have recently spent less money on ‘unnecessary expenses’. For example, holidays were often not possible and the catering industry was closed for a long time.”

Van den Bosch does take into account that the number of people with payment problems may increase again if the government’s corona support stops and collection procedures are resumed. He also sees a potential risk in people who use part of their mortgage as consumer credit.

over 60s

While the BKR sees the financial situation of most age groups improving, the number of people over 60 with payment arrears is increasing. Because many pensions have not been indexed for years, their purchasing power is under great pressure, according to the credit registry.

On average, 4.2% of adults have payment problems. The problems are greatest in Rotterdam (10%), Schiedam (9.1%) and The Hague (8.7%). The three municipalities with the least payment problems are Rozendaal (0.4%), Bunnik (1.1%) and Midden Delfland (1.2%).
