El gran público de Miami posiblemente no se haya enterado. Sonríen a la cámara, se hacen fotos y sujetan mojitos de colores mientras el asfalto del Hard Rock Stadium ofrece otra de esas clasificaciones indescifrables. En la Q1, 19 coches separados por menos de un segundo, con la sensación de que cualquier cosa podría suceder. En la Q3, casi nadie mejoró en su segundo intento sobre un asfalto extraño y cambiante. Verstappen logró la séptima pole consecutiva con márgenes más bien escasos. Aventajó en 0.141 a Leclerc y fueron 0.214 sobre Sainz, pero realmente nunca pareció que los Ferrari fueran una amenaza por la primera posición.

Carlos batió a Pérez, eso quizás permita a los de Maranello poner en problemas a Verstappen con alguna estrategia doble optimista. Si es que se atreven. Porque en el esprint la renta de Max no fue enorme (tres segundos sobre Leclerc en 19 vueltas, décima y media por vuelta). Habrá que intentarlo, por las buenas o por las malas. Y en esta temporada, al tricampeón solo se le podrá ganar forzando la maquinaria en todos los sentidos. También con una salida agresiva de los dos Ferrari para con Max, y no entre ellos. No como la de Shanghái.

El formato de esprint solía mostrar un gran premio aleatorio, pero con los retoques se ha conseguido justo lo contrario: ya que los equipos pueden trabajar en el coche tras la carrera corta, tienen más datos que nunca (un entrenamiento, una clasificación y una buena tanda larga) para afinar los monoplazas antes de la fase decisiva. Por eso no hay muchas sorpresas: Max, Ferrari, Checo, McLaren y Mercedes quedaron ordenados en la parrilla.

Discreto gran premio de Aston Martin

En cambio, el gran premio de Aston Martin es más bien discreto. Ya ni a una vuelta. Alonso clasificó 15º, eliminado en la Q2. Es el peor resultado de la temporada; y Stroll fue 11º. Las mejoras del resto empiezan a marcar la diferencia y en el garaje de los británicos aparentemente no han sido capaces de tener el monoplaza bajo control. Todo tras el accidentado esprint sin puntos. Al asturiano se le queda un domingo a la contra, obligado a remontar con estrategias alternativas y a la espera de factores externos, como un ‘safety car’ oportuno.

El problema no es tanto tener un mal día, o un mal fin de semana, como que en esta Fórmula 1 rápidamente se abandona el furgón del top-5 para formar parte de la terrible zona media. Esa zona media en la que por la mañana Ricciardo es el héroe (cuarto en el esprint) y por la tarde le eliminan en la Q1. La misma zona media que cuela a un Haas en el top-10 (Hulkenberg, 9º) y deja al otro penúltimo con múltiples penalizaciones. Ahí este deporte se vuelve peligroso, de hecho es donde suceden todos los embudos de primera curva, y será mejor que el elegante coche verde sepa distinguirse de los rivales menores.
