Ferns United secure third Premier Division crown in a row

Ferns United secured their third Premier Division title in a row and their tenth in total when Adamstown beat Bree United 3-2 away on Wednesday, a result that helped their own cause for the Division 1 crown and ensured Ferns could not be caught for Premier honours.

Ferns showed their true strength as champions on Saturday when they took on a young Ballindaggin side, running out comfortable 8-0 winners with goals from Aoife Curran, Hayley Nolan, Liz Evered, Nicola Davitt, and two each from Leona Breen and Amy Wilson.

League Chairman Daire Doyle was on hand to present the league trophy to the jubilant Ferns side who have a busy few weeks coming up as they prepare for the LFA Women’s Junior Cup final, FAI Amateur Cup second round, Premier 1 shield final, and ‘Flash’ Dunne Wexford Cup semi-final.

As well as this being Ferns’ tenth title, there are players on the squad who were members of Clonee United who also won the Premier league three times.

History was made in Ramstown on Sunday when Wicklow Rovers and Carnew played in the first all-Wicklow final in the Wexford Women’s League, with Rovers winning 2-0 to take the Divisional Shield.

Three under-age league trophies were presented during the week, with St. Leonards taking two of them, winning the Under-14 Division 2B trophy on Tuesday and the Under-13 Division 1 title on Wednesday.

Rosslare Rangers were their opponents in the Under-14 game and, despite not being in the running for the title themselves, they gave St. Leonards a very good run for their money before the Ballycullane girls eventually ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Leah Reville and Orlaith Burke.

Wednesday saw the Under-13 side travel to Forth Celtic and wrap up their division with a 5-0 win over the hard-working home side.

Once again Orlaith Burke was on target, with Eve Cullen also finding the net and Holly Barton scoring a hat-trick.

This completed a treble for the club as they had secured the Under-12 Premier title a few weeks back, so the future looks to be safe.

Near neighbours Campile United wrapped up the Under-14 Division 2A title on Saturday ,making it seven wins from seven games as they beat closest challengers Killenagh Wanderers 6-1.

A strong first 20 minutes had Campile 3-0 up and in control and although Killenagh did make every effort to get a foothold on the game with a goal from Tegan Moore, it was not enough as the home side scored three more to secure the title.

Campile’s goals came from Emma Fitzharris, Faye Kavanagh, Róisín Doyle, Rose Corcoran, and two from Áine McWilliams.

League Under-16 manager Ian Gaffney was on hand to present the victorious side with their trophy.

With the league’s Under-19 squad already through to the last four, home advantage was what was on offer as they hosted the DDSL in the final group game in Bunclody.

Wexford have a great record at this level, having won two of the last three competitions, and they are eager to get their name back on the cup once again having lost out to Galway in last year’s semi-final.

A strong start against the Dublin-based league saw them go 2-0 up with goals from Holly Dooley and Caoimhe Byrne, and when Farrin Wolohan made it 3-0 early in the second-half, the win was more or less secured.

A lapse in concentration did allow the visitors in to score a consolation, but a late reply from Hannah Kehoe made it 4-1 and Wexford will now have a home draw in the semi-final.
