Fantasy Injury Updates Week 14: News on Trevor Lawrence & Derek Carr

The NFL’s game of “Whac-A-Mole” at the quarterback position continued last week, as it appears the injury bug is on a quest to capture all 32 opening-week starters at some point in 2023. Trevor Lawrence and Derek Carr were the latest names added to the list, though Carr is certainly no stranger to being injured this season. Regardless, both players are eager to find their way onto the field and off the injury reports to keep their teams — and your fantasy football teams — in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Below, we’ll give you the latest news on these key QBs and break down how their injuries could potentially affect the Week 14 fantasy landscape.

Trevor Lawrence injury update, Week 14 fantasy outlook

UPDATE: Lawrence was limited in practice on Thursday.

Lawrence (ankle) was unable to practice on Wednesday, which should come as no surprise considering how Monday night’s game ended for him. The quarterback was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, which means that missing time is the likeliest outcome if history is any indication. Jacksonville still hasn’t ruled Lawrence out for Week 14, though, but we’d still be fairly surprised if he ended up suiting up against Cleveland on Sunday. While Lawrence’s fantasy season is in jeopardy, Jaguars fans can still take solace in the fact that it appears the QB will play again this season.

For the glass-half-full crowd, Lawrence plays a position that doesn’t require constant movement and stress on the injured ankle. While his mobility would likely be limited, the QB can still stand in the pocket and make all the necessary throws. Still, it would be quite shocking to see Lawrence play in Week 14. If he does, we’d have no choice but to downgrade the QB and consider an alternative against a stout Browns’ defense. The Jaguars also lost WR1A Christian Kirk for what’s likely to be the season with a core muscle injury, leaving WR1B Calvin Ridley to take on more of a consistent role. RB Travis Etienne has also been banged up, meaning we’d rather avoid Jacksonville’s offense on a short week against a great defense. While C.J. Beathard impressed in relief of Lawrence on Monday night, history tells us that is more of an outlier than anything else.

Derek Carr injury update, Week 14 fantasy outlook

UPDATE: Carr was limited in practice on Thursday.

Carr (concussion, rib, shoulder) was limited in practice on Wednesday. It’s quite an amazing feat for a QB who appears destined to check off every injury box imaginable this season. According to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, the concussion is the only thing that would keep Carr from playing on Sunday, which leaves him at the mercy of the protocol.

Without Carr, the Saints would likely turn to Jameis Winston to start on Sunday against the Panthers while sprinkling in plenty of Taysom Hill as usual. Although Carr’s willingness to play is sure to earn respect from teammates and coaches for being a “warrior,” the Saints’ season is reaching a point where someone has to tell him to sit out. The offense has been abysmal with him under center, as it’s clear the injuries are taking a toll. New Orleans did march back on Sunday in Detroit against the Lions, but the team is doing a disservice to their playoff hopes that are hanging on by a thread while waiting around to see if Carr can clear concussion protocol. It’s hard to trust anyone in this New Orleans offense, but Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave remain solid starters thanks to their volume and Hill is an intriguing TE or flex option, but Winston isn’t a great QB despite the inherent “excitement” that seems to follow him.
