Extra reward for teachers in schools with many disadvantages

Extra reward for teachers in schools with many disadvantages

Teachers, school leaders and other staff in schools with significant disadvantages will receive an allowance of an average of 8 percent of their wages for the next two school years. This makes it more attractive to (continue to) work at these schools in primary, secondary and special education. This gives all children a chance to make up for the arrears caused by the corona virus. This is reported by the Dutch government.

These are schools that have to deal with many challenging students and an extra high risk of falling behind, about 15 percent of all school locations (more than 1,300 locations). Teachers, teaching assistants, school principals and other teaching staff of these schools can receive a minimum of 5 percent and an average of 8 percent of their wages. The branches that are entitled to this will be informed as soon as possible. It can also be found at www.nponderwijs.nl/po-en-vo/bekostiging/arbeidsmarkttoelage. The amount may differ per location, because it also depends on the number of students at the school. The part of the teaching staff that is on the participation council must agree to the allowance.

Calculation examples

The amounts will differ per scale and step, but on average they look like this:

  • Primary school teacher: an extra 350 euros per month on average;
  • Teaching assistant at a primary school: an average of 260 euros extra per month;
  • School leader at a primary school: an average of 490 euros extra per month;
  • Teacher at a secondary school: an average of 430 euros extra per month;
  • Teaching assistant at a secondary school: an average of 310 euros extra per month;
  • School leader at a secondary school: an average of 600 euros extra per month.

These calculation examples are based on the average monthly remuneration, i.e. salary plus holiday pay, year-end bonuses and other allowances applicable to everyone. The amounts are gross and based on a full-time appointment.

National Programme

The money for this allowance comes from the National Education Program, which is intended to eliminate the disadvantages of students that they have incurred as a result of corona. Especially children and young people who already had fewer opportunities, have suffered from not being able to go to school. It will be paid out for the school years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023. During this period, schools use proven effective interventions from a menu to help children and young people move forward.
