Star England batter Jonny Bairstow was almost involved in another bizarre run-out after the controversial events of the Lord’s Test in the 2023 Ashes during the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Asscoation Stadium in Dharamshala.

As Bairstow opened the innings for PBKS in a massive run-chase of 242, he had a major scare on the final delivery of the second over. Although the veteran English cricketer completed a single, he jumped after crossing the crease, and his feet were in the air when a direct hit from RCB skipper Faf du Plessis hit the stumps.

With Bairtow in the air and no part of his body or the bat on the crease when the ball hit the stumps, one expected that the 34-year-old would have to return to the dressing room. However, the third umpire declared it not-out despite evident nervousness on Bairstow’s face.

Why Was Jonny Bairstow Given Not Out?

So did the third umpire make a mistake or was there a glitch? No. In 2017, the MCC Laws of Cricket saw an amendment that meant that a batter who has grounded his bat once will not be out even if he or she bounces outside later.

“If the bat (held by the hand) or another part of the batsman’s person is grounded beyond the popping crease and this contact with the ground is subsequently lost when the wicket is put down, the batsman will be protected from being run out if he/she is running or diving and has continued forward momentum towards the stumps and beyond,” a MCC statemet in 2017 said.
