The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made a huge announcement on Sunday (April 28) and unveiled their new head coaches. Gary Kirsten has taken over as the head coach of the white-ball teams while Jason Gillespie will be working with the Test team. Both the coaches have been awarded a two-year contract each.

The Indian fans are well-versed with Gary as he had a successful stint as Team India’s head coach. Gary, who replaced Greg Chappell as Team India’s head coach, worked closely with MS Dhoni from 2008 to 2011. Under him, India ended their 28-year wait and won the 2011 World Cup trophy.

They also enjoyed huge success in Test cricket and climbed to the top spot in the ICC rankings for the first time. Gary left an indelible mark on Indian cricket but has never worked with Team India again.

Though he has been associated with Indian cricket through IPL. Gary started his IPL coaching career with Delhi Capitals before he moved to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He has been working with Gujarat TItans (GT) since their IPL debut in 2022 and has enjoyed huge success with them.

Since Gary has now joined the Pakistan cricket team, Indian fans would be wondering why he didn’t apply for the position of Team India’s head coach in past. There is a big reason behind it and Gary will have to make a big sacrifice if he wants to work with Team India again.

Under the BCCI’s rules, any coach working with Team India (men or women or U19 or India A) cannot work with an IPL franchise or any other team. He has to be fully committed to Indian cricket. Rahul Dravid had to quit as the head coach of Delhi Capitals in 2017 as he was working with India A and U19 teams. The other coaches also left their jobs at IPL.

Gary will have to leave his job at Gujarat Titans to work with Team India. Coaching India is a hectic job and the coach only gets a two-month break during IPL. That’s not the case now as Gary has to work just three months in IPL.

Gary’s stint as Pakistan’s head coach will be sort of a part-time gig as he won’t be working with the Test team. This will allow him to work in IPL as well. Gary has his task cut out as Pakistan’s head coach and it will be interesting to see how the Men in Green fair under him. He will join the team after the ongoing IPL season.
